I plan on upgrading my pc to an Athlon 800 in a few months, and i was wondering if i should get pc133 Ram. How much of an improvent is it over pc100? I'm planning to get a 256MB chip, so is it worth it to shell out the extra $50 for pc133? Are there any issues that I should know about? Do you guys recommend it? I was also trying to consider which athlon motherboard to get. What are your favorites?

This isn't too helpful but, I assumed PC133 made a notable speed improvement. I am going to have that with my new comp which probably will arrive Monday.
Many others here have PC133 and will tell you about it http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Maybe I have this wrong. Doesn't the ram run at front side bus speed? So unless you plan to overclock you won't see any difference between them. Unless you were to change the cas speed.

you can run the ram at a 4:3 ratio with a 100mhz bus which gives you 133mhz. I have tried it with both and havent noticed any real differences in games or overall windows preformance, it makes o'cing a lot easier tho.

I though that the athlon has a 200 MHZ bus. And, I was informed that most pc133 ram is optimized specifically for athlon processors. I don't know much about bus speeds and stuff, and i don't plan on overclocking, So is it really worth it? Why would they make pc133 if it wouldn't be compatible with anything?

Athlons have a 100MHz DDR (which transfers data on rising and falling sides of the clock, giving an equivelent of a max of 200MHz SDR) BUS, totally seperate from the PCI and RAM clock speeds.
All boards based on VIA '133' series chipsts (should) have the ability to run the memory at 33MHz faster than the bus.
RAM can't be optimised for a processor. The RAM may be just of higher quality as Athlon mothboiards reject bad/cheap RAM in most cases.
And how is the RAM not compatible with anything? Even if no motherboard on earth couild run at 133MHz, the ram will work perfect at 100MHz, 66MHz, e.t.c.

pc 100 will work just fine with your 800 Athlon and from personal experience with my own athlon I have seen no difference with 133 so save the few dollars with ram prices so high now and go with the 100...Micron is a good chip and works well with the Athlon..most name brand will work and so will many generic..

I didn't make it up. (that some pc133 i is optimised for athlon)I found some ram made by zeus components that said, "designed for athlon proccessors." Ligten up. I would like to thank codybear, though. He gave me just the answer i was looking for.
