Here is a screenshot of the new AOL 6.0. I downloaded the Beta and I am pleasantly surprised. I like the new look and it's very zippy with my cable connection.

Try using "their virus" instead of "there virus." It is key to use proper grammar when slamming something. Don't knock something just for the sake of knocking it. I use 5.0 and it works fine.

Take a look at this thread to see what I consider to be the merits of AOL

so does this version of AOL tend to block web browsing with a regular browser when dialed up with ohter ISPs??

Mgordon, how big is the download? That's often a clue about how much "bloat" it contains.

I figured that I would be flamed, so be it.

Keep in mind that I have a cable connection and ISP, so I don't have the dial up and related problems that go with it.

AOL is great with parental controls if you have kids, which I do. So I pay the $9.95 a month for it.

No, it does not block the use of other browsers. It asks you if you want AOL to be the default browser and email program, I simply selected no.

The download took 15 min, but I'm on cable. I think it said 80 min for 56K.

It does look a little more dignified.

I also concur that AOL does have parental controls - a very good thing but second to actually supervising and educating kids.

Still no way to connect using AOL with Linux - except maybe using an AOL terminal emulator...but I don't think the TOS allows that... at least AOL finally has a version of AIM for Linux...

I personally did not like the way AOL software tended to lockup my computers and force a reboot anytime there was a problem... even the three-finger-salute would not bail me out.

add note: I did like the way it was possible to go into the AOL "Organize" folder and snoop on other family members website navagation and latest email - even though they had cleverly deleted all the internet history elsewhere on the computer..hehehe http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Can you use *Google* as a search engine with it ? Which way is the internet when you use that one ?

AOL 6.0 has been fun to beta test. I was also involved with the Win2K beta testing for 5.0. We still have AOL on the BYOA (bring your own access)plan 9.95 a month and it is great for the kids and my wife enjoys it to as they have some great tailored content for school teachers were she and other teachers can exchange lesson plans and collaborate on curriculum. Heck I still have a screen name on AOL. I don't receive spam on it as I have gone in an set my preferences and I dont give that email addy out anymore than I do my others.

Spark, you should be able to, even if you don't decline to use aol as your default browser online.

I'm always a bit frustrated with aol's betas as I use a companion program that makes aol much nicer, but doesn't work with aol betas!
