This is from "SpinRite" hard drive utility mfg=>> "Scandisk is probably guilty of more data loss than any other utility ever created. Since everyone has Scandisk, everyone uses it. But few people realize that Scandisk does NOTHING other than discard any data that it can't read" http://grc.com/sroverview.htm , Is this correct? DrVette

DrVette - that's basically all it does. Scandisk sucks and I never use it. If you want a real hdd file fixer, get SpinRite. Been using it for years and never had a problem except when a drive is truley toast.

Yeh I've had scandisk re-arrange my folders into numerical order (dir0001,dir00002....) a few times.Although it is handy if the FAT stuffs up.My old seagate legacy gets stuffed once a month or so and I have to re-install windows.Thing is it re-arranges EVERYTHING in the dir001 and you have to click "FIX IT".Lucky I know how to use switches or I wouldn't have tossed that h/d out ages ago.It makes loud humming noises when It starts up every now and again also.

Now come on now. Scandisk isn't that bad. I am sure if scandisk renamed your folders to dir00001 etc... that you had a little more wrong with your system than just running scandisk. what made you run scandisk in the 1st place? A bad shutdown or did you do it hoping to fix something else? Either way I have fixed my share of computers by simply running scandisk. Although I think spin-rite is a superior product, I prefer not to put excess software in my system (I despise Nortons utilities - too much stuff). And of course this is just my two point five cents worth.

jman - running spinrite on a drive has nothing to do with "adding software" to a machine. You run it off a clean boot disk.

I posted a site for newbies for maintaining their puters. Check it out. http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Circuit/9147/tippages/beemerswindowstips/ma intain.htm (http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Circuit/9147/tippages/beemerswindowstips/maintain.htm)
I use these settings myself with only one change. I don't ned to see a log. I go to the log when I have a chance in C:\. If you keep your machine clean including file system and registry fat, do clean and perfect installs of prog's, Don't be on ICQ when doing downloads, etc...etc...
A little re-arrangment of personal computing habbits usually allows scandisk the proper environment to do it's thing. It has for me and many others. Compare your advanced setup with my suggested setup panel. Maybe there is something there for you. Any feedback on this or improvement that I can use would be appriciated. If you don't learn something every day, you aren't doing your day right. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/icons/icon12.gif

I remember my mother's computer was acting funny once, and I couldn't figure out the culprit. I ran McAfee with the latest definition files, and scandisk and defrag. They all came back with no problems. Well, I took the drive to my friend's place, where he used Norton Disk Doctor on my drive (back in the day of FAT16). It found and repaired 390 errors. Is scandisk ****? YES!
Hey, um, I'm curious... what disk scanning tools are there for FAT32 drives? Is SpinRite?
I haven't had any problems running Scandisk on a stable drive... Now, if the system happens to have a lot of problems then Scandisk will throw out bunch of garbage at you.
