I've been told to disable my virus scanner to do certain apps from time to time. I have McAfee Virusscan 3.x and have no idea how to disable it, and they provide no clues on how to do it. Anyone out there have any ideas? Thanks, again. Jim.

Well, I'm not too sure. I would guess that you can find the icon for it in the little taskbar there, right click on it and selct disable or shutdown, or something like that. But then again it might not let you. I guess you can always use ctrl-alt-del, then select the anti-virii one and end it...but i don't know what type of OS you are using, so all this information could be completely usesless to you...but i did want to say one thing...Don't worry about asking too many questions...thats the only way you will learn... granted, I'm still a junior member, but i've been in here for quite a while...the first 6 months or so, I just kinda lurked around, I just "sponged" in all the info here, then when i started getting the hang of stuff, and seeing the same problem over and over, I started posting more and more...

ah yes i remeber the good old day of MaC Afee. what i think you need to do is go into properties and look for anything checked that sayz scan in the background. uncheck it and your set. Either that look in your options folder and look around in there.

What I'm wondering is why would you need to disable it?

Uses resources and conflicts with some programs. I used to always disable that.

You can use your Run and type msconfig. go to the Startup tab and take the check out of anything that is McAfee. Look to the right of all entries for a brief clue of what a item is. While you are in there, shut down any other unecessary progy that you don't need to start with Windows bootup. you will gain resourses by doing so.
I don't use virus detection software. In 2 years I haven't had a virus. keep upto date with virus warnings and the next time you receive an E-mail with a .exe in it think twice if it is really worth the little bit of fun you will experience to open this thing up and possibly get a virus. You can be hit with any new virus that comes out even if you have your virus scanning software updated. Being lulled into a comfort zone by your virus detection software is just as dangerous as driving down the road with your eyes closed. I have taught several of my friends what to look for with viruses.
Check out this site and learn what is out there. You might decide to get some resourses back. http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/index.html

Hey Hallam...yeah I start asking a few questions then all of a sudden I'm eating up bandwidth http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif. I've been in the business a long time but mainly on big mainframe stuff. Been in the PC environs for about 3 years and learning something everyday. Man I'll tell you, I just love THIS site. Finally one of the few places where you get good info and responses.
Keep the good responses flowing folks.
