At my job we have a saying ==>> "Those who can, DO. Those who can't, TEACH. Those who can't teach, MANAGE." This is the most accurate statement reagarding my company I've heard. The best hardest workers are allowed to do it all, the deadbeats are sooner or later found a desk to occupy. Oh, I forgot, in order to be a deadbeat you have to meet certain criteria. The spec is "29" Vacuum on a Screen Wire Porch.." Be the boss' pal and you got it made in the shade.. thanks for the bandwidth.. DrVette

Lets see, I've worked at 5 Ford dealerships, and all but 1, the management was only interested in the bottom line, nothing else.
My new Job, I'm working at a scrap yard, repairing cranes and heavy equipment, 3/4 of the employees are related, all from the little peons to management, the problem for me is, I'm not related to anyone there, and I'm usually one of the first to get thrown under the bus, which is why I have the post college (http://www.sysopt.com/forum/Forum1/HTML/004986.html) http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

My immediate manager is very fair, will not ask anybody to do things he woldn't do, and he fully supports my trying to get my CCNA cert even though it means I will be moving to another career. His boss (my genral MICROmanager) is a spineless jellyfish that makes everyone in my department wear a pager with no extra compensation, constantly getting called in on your day off, but HE doesn't have to wear one type. I got the last laugh, My pager is taped to the inside of my locker for the next 2 weeks,(on vacation!!) and my answering machine suddenly went in the shop.

I'm a retired Coal Miner, LU#1825. Spent 23 years in the coal fields. I'm definitly PRO Labor. I decided when I retired, I would NEVER work for another Corporation. The most horrible phrase in the English language is "Human Resources"! It used to be 'Personnel', but has degenerated into how they really feel about their workers.....human resources!!!!

I am not sure I should comment, being the founder, owner and boss.
but if you can't respect those who work for you then you should either have never employed them or should not be in a possition to have employed them, treat your workers good, and be honest with them and it's amazing how they pull round to help when you have troubles, so they deserve the same back.
Just my 2c worth.

My direct line manager is the fairest boss I have ever had. She can be a bit loopy sometimes, but most of the time makes good calls and is very professional.
Can't say the same for out department head though. Surfs the web all day, long lunches at the pub, feet on the desk (we run an 'open' office where clients can walk in).
He just went abroad with a proposal for a client which may get us a grant worth several million dollars for a new building. He phoned yesterday from the airport hotel to tell us he had lost the specially-commissioned-for-this-bid architect's drawings. Make your own mind up. Dilbert's PHB anyone?

I never met a boss I couldn't get on the inside of, that doesn't mean I liked them, but I go to work to "get the job done." Some consider that @$$ kissing but I learned a long time ago that it is better not to buck the system - sometimes it sucks - live with it, work around it, or move on.
Perhaps some of you can imagine what it is like to have to scan a #$%^%^ F#<|<i$& barcode every single time you finsih a repair job, or go to lunch, or do anything else - and have your time reviewed each day by your supervisor, who incidentally doesn't have to scan anything...? For two years I worked repairing and installing specialty vehicle equipment for LAPD vehicles and that is precisely what we had to do.
I'll tell you who I want to strangle; that <0<|< $#<|<in& little IS/IT/programer brainiac bass*tard who dreamed up having employees scan barcodes - let him scan those #$%^%^$%ing bar codes!!!!!! Do doctors scan barcodes for surgical labor? Do the mayor or city council members scan barcodes to account for their time... and they wonder why so many people are leaving (like I did)... I'll tell you what, if I could take the person responsible for the barcode/labor thing to an LAPD garage there wouldn't be anything left big enough to identify the guy!!@

What's the difference between an ***-kisser and a brown-noser?
Depth perception!
Most bosses that I had were fair-minded individuals who were interested in getting the job done. The problem that I encountered with "management" was that there were so many layers, all working at odds with each other. Consequently, my direct boss (where I formerly worked) NEVER gave me a review, never gave me a raise, never promoted me (even though I received awards from the company and was granted >10 patents) because HIS boss thought I was too "analytical". I thought for a time that I fell down the rabbit-hole! Up was down, left was right, etc. It got to be a running joke that all management was done after the upper-eschelon read the daily "Dilbert" cartoon for direction!
Although they'd never admit it, most folks in corporate management want a legion of "Stepford workers" toiling for them, kissing up to their rumps when necessary and fawning over their obvious intellectual superiority. The slogans and the buzzwords (e.g. empowerment) are all meant as management tools to shoot the messenger or the percieved guilty.
God I hated the hypocricy, so I started my own business and I've been a pretty good boss to myself lately! And I just got my performance review and merit increase: above average on each!!!
Seriously, about half of my clients are Fortune 100 or greater companies. I get to look at the management from the "outside in", and if real people weren't involved, the situations would be laughable. The "Peter Principle" is still 'de rigeur' in most companies -- cream rarely rises to the top, but *hit truly does float!
So, if you get a clueless or dominating or (enter descrition here) boss, don't hate him/her but pity them. It's usually not their fault. But do CHERISH the boss who's fair-minded, doesn't play favorites and stands up to upper management in defense of his/her direct reports. 'Cause sooner or later you're going to end up with a "floater".

I can NOT believe the Cookie Monster is a brownie boy,, What a surprise <IMG SRC="http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif" border=0> ,
We do agree on what to do to the person who came up with the bar code scanner systems, rather the ones that don't interface right.
(That's a word ya don't hear anymore!)(interface)
For two years we've been attempting to get a bar code system right..
Tonym, I like that, Stepford workers,
I suppose it's regional but here they expect a response like Pavlov's dog.
The bunch I work, for which happens to have more than ten thousand employees, has established a "good-ole-boy" network.
They make sure you won't expose the dirt by intimidation, threats(open), transferring you to an undesirable location, withholding bonus monies etc, etc.
If they have any doubts of your complete "storm trooper" type loyalty, then you are not invited to join the club.
This type mentality is equal to the ones who a few generations ago tortured certain groups because of ethnic descent or National origin or from-semantic intolerance.
A recent whistleblower who squealed about some federal law allegations received a dead canary.
A few months later the rented company Lear went down from "mechanical" problems with him and all on board lost..
I'll leave the embellishment for others, this info is all true.. so sad..

In my workplace, if you're a minority and am a good sucker-upper you're almost guaranteed to step up the ladder into middle management. I myself are a part of that minority and I was offered promotions since my 2 years but never did take the jump 'cause its not worth the money. For an extra dime, they drop a tonne load on you and make you work your ***** off.
In case you guys don't know what I'm referring to...its McDonalds
McDonalds' has this great image of caring for the community and the little dudes/dudettes. But behind the scene or closed doors they turn around and drive us teens like crazy slaves. Its hard as it is tryin' to earn a decent income @ minimum wage, yet they try to cut your daily workload to 2/3/4 hours. With transportation cost in mind, we're practically giving ourselves away. All they care about is the labour cost and profit, with absolutely no regards to our situations. Its dispicable (spelling?).
Everybody whose in management in this place are a bunch of sucker-uppers. I feel the need to differentiate myself from the group.
I don't want to go any lower and become one of them.
Not to mention that wage increases are totally inconsiderate of inflation. Woah, a whole extra canadian dime. If it were not for the government bringing up minimum wage, I'd still be working for way below the poverty level. As time goes by, the real value of our take home pay is gonna drop like a bomb cause they're lousy raises aren't even enough to cover inflation.
Too bad not all McDonalds have a Union.
It'd be more beneficial to us vulnerable kids.
Hey didn't mean to rant, but you asked...I spoke.
Good thing I'm quiting soon.
Gonna jump back into day school, hopefully graduate within 2 years, and earn a decent living and be able to get my parents to retire before they're 65.

Of the twenty two members of out immediate management team only six rate OK,
two question mark due to newness to our location.
So 16 of 22 are unacceptable,
the issues besides fairness are,
pre-judging by looks,
insisting on "Do it my way",
cooking the equipment failure books due to poor planning/operation,
application of company assets to personal use,
selective application of rules by race,
two faced reporting,
falsification of safety reports,
permitting some employees to use company time to run their own business while at work and at the same time running down the ones they hate for whatever reason.. man,
I need a long vacation.
Maybe permanent.
Some of you see people as fools when they run down big business.
Till you witness the absolute and complete corruption that money/power can produce, you'll probably doubt the veracity of allegations as severe as these.

As far as employees using company time to do personal biz', in McD its mostly the managers who're slacking off BIG TIME. Can't say too much 'cause they are my seniors.

Too true, too true, DrVette.
Management at my university is a ship of fools, at least at low and middle levels. I don't see much of upper level management but have not been impressed by what I've seen so far. Uncaring, shortsighted, and self-serving at the expense of the group are the adjectives that strike my mind when I think of their policies.
There are some nice or even smart people, but they are kind of paralyzed by the tangled system.
I'm being wooed by a union, but am worried that here's just another group who will make my life difficult. At the risk of starting a storm: what have been your experiences in workplaces with or without unions?
Richard_Cranium72

I worked in 1970 for Hon Industries, makers of filing cabinets.
This company would announce long hours about 1 hr before quitting time.
So at 10:00pm the'd come out and say "Call your babysitters, we're working over"
A bit inconvenient don't ya think.
Later they fired 13 of us for "talking" union.
Now there are signs everywhere about no union solicitation.
These people aren't satisfied with 8 solid hours of slave type labor, they wish to destroy your home life also..
Now, UNION.
The union is good in ways that you are aware of I'm sure,
the bad is that when some idiot needs firing badly, a really good union steward can sometimes pull some obscure ruling outta the hat to keep him on.
Or advise him on actions to retain his position.
Ancient history,
-> NEVER forget what Henry Ford did to his workers when they tried to organize.
He got the local Police force to "encourage" them not to organize.
This resulted in carnage, lots of people shot or beaten to death...
If not for the Union(IMO) the American worker would still be in the dark ages money wise, and be faced with horrific work conditions.
When I refused to enter a "closed vessel" without fresh air, lung protection etc I was asked,
"What makes you so special, nobody else needs it ?"
that was 1975,
Now it is mandatory because of Pontiac Fever and Legionnaires Disease and low oxygen content.
I was allowed to use the protection btw only because of my union.
The factories without unions locally now pay minimum wage,
in the 60's and 70's a man could work there and support the family.
I made between $4.50 and 6.50 an hour in those days in the same sweat shops.
Today with inflation figured, these are below poverty wages..
We need to thank our govt for NAFTA, sending a bunch of jobs away so our people can do without.. Mexico has shown no regard for environmental concerns,
the GM, Ford and other large factories there dump inordinate amounts of by-products into the air and water.
Witness southern California rivers that flow north.. another sad situation..

I'm pretty fortunate. I've got a boss that is really great. He's been in the IT field for 25 years. He never yells or belittles me or anyone else that I've seen for that matter, even when he is explaining something for the 5th time because we don't do that task enough to really remember it. He stands behind us when the going gets tough. He has taught all of us so much, in incrediable. Quite frankly, it's priviledge to work for him.

As far as I am concerned unions have had their place in History.... was a member of a union for a number of years and all they ever did was cost me money. Now work somewhere with no union thank goodness. Have a decent contract (not perfect, but not the worst either) As for management here? Some are ok some are complete idiots and have no right even being anywhere near those jobs. I make a bit less than a manager here so I an not taking that plunge for just a few bucks extra a pay cheque.

Well the intimidation continues,
The Evil Empire knows that I know TOO MUCH.
They have started some silly little stuff on me which will eventually lead to dismissal or worse.
They wrote me up for being late when my cat was hurt,, then again when it was injured badly and then died at the hands of an incompetent vet.
Now, lacking any thing credible, they are taking action on me for having a hurt back.
I was on 6 months probation for having Dr excused illnesses.
This expired on Oct 5th.
Since the 5th I've been out 1 day and 6 hours. The day out was Dr Excused and the other one was spent at the DR's office.
Now they've re-instated the probation period for 6 MORE months for "EXCESS SICK TIME"
They have found a weakness and are exploiting it to the fullest.
If I suddenly disappear, I may be in Jail for busting one of them in the mouth,, multiple times http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif

To CMonster.
I would realy like to meet you or talk at least ....!!!
i've never met a person that doesn't make mistakes ... even i do
Thats why damm barcodes were invented !!
For people whom think they don't make error's but it's our nature to make mistakes.
And barcodes are to remove the human error factor of data input. don't you ever mystype a word or a number.
You don't realize just how important does damm barcodes are !!!
1 Example:
you get a car crash ... your seriously injured....you need a transfusion...the little chick goes bopping to the blood reserve and gets the wrong blood type...luckily the nurse scans your file(barcoded) and realises after scanning the blood pouch that its the wrong type... you live happily after recovering. !!
That's just 1 of thousand's of examples i could give you.

whoa, what a topic..just when i thought i didnt have to think about work anymore..my COMPANY is fair with good benifits,it's a retail automotive chain with over 150 stores..but has managers driven by the bottom line..when i started 5 years ago i accepted a lower wage due to the fact i was a fresh journeyman mech..so now i've been here 5 years..make 2 dollars more and just found out that a guy thats been there 3 years less and is not half as reliable is getting 1.75 more than me..when i approached management they say try to work harder and we will review your numbers(labour sales) in a month..so how fair is a management that will let a certified mech scrape by on an apprentices wage..just so their profit and loss statement looks a little better..but unless you are willing to walk they walk on you..but yeah richard sounds like your getting the shaft,if you have a labour board down there i would collect as much info as you can and if they let you go..punish them with wrongful dismissal or something like that..

hey there Doc...how are ya?
I just quit my job of 10+ years and a career of 25+ years and started my own business and so now its not a problem and I must say that in all my jobs over those 25+ years I stayed with the smaller shops and did everything that was ask of me and more until I had the skill and knowledge to be able to write my own ticket as far as jobs go and for the past 15 years I have pretty much been able to come and go as I please as long as my work was done. I was one of the best and prided myself on that fact and so the hours and pay were mine to pretty much say what I wanted..**** few anywhere in the country were as good as me and that's what made it work....even then I still did more than was expected and in the beginning when I did have to endure those a$$hole bosses...I gave them the same thing because that's a measure of a man.....it doesn't matter what kind of management is in place or what kind of job you have..you still get paid by the hour with the good and the bad management and if you don't like your job then go find another..a word of advise to the younger ones here and everywhere...education and dedication will take you wherever you wish to go....go that extra mile not because you want to kiss some **** but because that's just what you are about...be a giver and not a taker and never expect yet respect everybody..they bleed just as you do....
all this can be summed up into what we all learned in kindergarten..do unto others as you would have them do unto you

In my experience, I've seen rather different forms of management. While I was in the navy, I saw an officer promoted after a cruise where he was not only under the influence on the bridge, he caused the boat to be run aground. After that, I saw management that denied some of the most basic rights enlisted have and wrote derogatory reviews on someone they hadn't observed at all.
Since then, most of the management I've seen had one thing in common, they covered their posteriors well, saying anything they felt like about employees. After all, everone under them was expendable, including middle management. Above-average skills and abilities were evaluated as average, outstanding skills were also average and could get one fired. The bottom line was all that mattered, despite posters about doing the job right the first time and customer service being the "top" priority.
Since relocating away from a "right to work and get screwed" state, I've just begun a job with a non-profit foundation. Don't know about upper management yet really. Since it's non-profit, the "tools" available are rather antiquated. The kinds of things I was able to do myself on the computer 10 years ago are still subcontracted out so we just look up accounts and fill out paperwork to get things done.
It's much less stressful, but inefficient. I can see where the money is just not there to upgrade and streamline operations. So far, the main benefits are being employed with some of the most pleasant people overall I've ever met. Hoping upper management is the same, so far they seem to be.
