I just built another PC. This for a friends business computer. We went to the computer show today and picked up her parts and I picked up a P3-450. I figured I'd put the 333 I was running at 500 in her PC and run it at 333, it's fast enough, and I dont need to OC it for her needs of a business computer. She needs stability.

Thats all good ya know, but after I installed Win98, on the final boot it locked up!

I rebooted in safe mode, np. But still, it locked up no matter what on normal booting or shortly after the OS was up and opening windows or even when trying to shut down.

Knowing everything was new except for the CPU and Video, both proved themselves already, I started the T/S procedure of parts swapping.

First remove all but video, no change. Next to swap out the video card, no change. Next the RAM, no change. Next the CPU, no change.

At this point the only things left are the MB and harddrive!

I took a long look at it this time, and realized, the video card was in one of the middle PCI slots, so I moved it next to the AGP slot and booted it...

Problem solved!

I never had a problem with video card placement in the BH6 before.

Strange, huh?

I think I must have came across one of the 'BAD' ABIT examples... It dont work with any other PCI card in it! I flashed bios and all already... bummer, guess I'll take it back tomorow.

I've had sorta the same problems with slots trying to configure modems, sound cards, vidcards. I swap them around the slots, and they seem to work eventually. This on an Intel and Abit BX6.

Then again last night putting in the modem and sound card, they just didn't want to configure. I took them both out for about an hour, let them "rest" on a table, then put them back in to try again. (I remember another poster said he did this). Both configured automatically. go figure.

I cant put any card in the last (lowest) PCI
slot without the system locking up. This is a problem with many BH6's.

Figured it out for good now!

After replacing all componants twice, with no change in the way it worked, I discovered something: S3 Virge video cards don't work in Win98 on a P2 system architecture!

I challenge anyone to make one work on a P2, I believe it is an impossibility!

I used a Matrox MGA from another friend.

I tried the S3 in his HP P2-233 and it wouldn't work in it either, but both my S3 cards work fine in my P233MMX.

Strange, I just never would have thought of it, but if I hadn't had 2 S3 cards, I would have used a different kind of card in it and I would have just thought the S3 was 'bad'.

It would have saved me a lot of trouble exchanging the motherboard!

Sorry, but challenge accepted and done. I work in a 'puter store and it's a quite common configuration around here (hey, I didn't say it was a GREAT computer store!!). I think it has alot to do with the board you're using. As a matter a fact, I have one on the bench right now with a PII-400 and an S3 video card in it running fine using a Gigabyte board. Just one of those things, I suppose!!

BBA...Good job!Your one tenatious person! But,it just goes to show.No matter how hard they try, compatibility problems are going to happen. That's the major reason I'm slow to replace my system.Patience, forethought, and input are the keys to this computer chaos we're in.

Danzego, was that a Virge 325 PCI?

I have an S3 with like every piece of extra cache room taken up, it works with my P2 BH6, but very instable, and slow.
