That explosion wouldn't have left more than a scorch mark on the IOWA-class battleships.

I'm not sure what a IOWA-class battleship is...I really don't know a lot about the different types of ships. But it has been said by military officials the the USS Cole is one of the most modern ships we have and if it would have been a older style ship ,this blast would have sank it.
Also everything I have read and seen on TV leads me to the fact, that this ship will probably never sail agin. It's not just a hole in the side of the ship. They have said the deck and many of the bulkheads are buckled. The water tight doors inside the ship no longer line up and so on.This is why they were still having flooding problems days after the blast, cause they couldn't properly seal all the hatches.
I'm sure our govt. will do everything they can to fix this ship.Even if it's not cost effective, just 4 the simple fact if this ship doesn't sail again, it will be an even bigger victory for these terrorist. But like I said there is much more damage than just a big hole in the side.
I will say I was totally amazed when I first saw the Cole on that ship.I saw it on the news and I was so suprised that there are ships that big.So big they can fit a ship the size of the Cole on its deck.
Great pics. I'd love to see that ship sail again.

I think he was pointing to the fact that the old battlewagons had a very thick belt of armor around the sides of the ship to protect against incoming ordinance. It was along the lines of a foot thick along the sides. If the terrorists did this with a shaped charge engineered to direct the force of the blast in one direction, they probably could have sank her in the port.
Water as we all know can't be compressed in volume,so maybe that was one of the reasons the damage was as bad as it was.
Yeah, if that was an Iowa class ship then all the repairs she'd need is a good paint crew.
I'm pretty sure the Iowa class ship was the most heavily armoured. And the belt was even HY-100 steel I believe.
If you've ever tried to work with HY-100, or even HY-80, you will know the meaning of 'solid steel' It's almost impossible to cut without a plasma cutter, and is still flexible to absorb impact. They designed Iowa class ships to survive torpedo attacks.
That should say it all there.

I see what you mean about the IOWA ships...i guess having armor that thick would have helped...well what is the thickness of the Cole's armor...didn't it have two layers of armor?

In WW2 they would have patched this ship up and it would have been sailing in 36 hours.
Destroyers/Cruisers sacrifice armor for top speed.

There's been a fundamental change in how our modern Navy is designed and for the most part it makes sense.
True 'modern' battleships saw action in World War I and World War II, with the Bismark and Tirpitz considered the most powerful battleships ever built at the time. They were superceded by aircraft carriers as the chief firepower of the ocean, but during WWII the two were used together.
The Iowa-class battleship was deployed before and during WW-II and was the last true battleship design deployed by the US. The last battleship in active service, USS Missouri, fired the opening shots of the Gulf War before being retired several months later.
Battleships were absolutely huge. Nearly as long as the Titanic (at 800 something feet one of the longest ships ever built) and weighing several times as much, an Iowa-class cruiser packed several 16 inch guns, each capable of delivering a massive shell to targets miles away. In terms of sheer firepower, no modern Navy cruiser or destroyer can hope to deliver the firepower of a WW-II era battleship--one reason the Missouri was still in active service only a decade ago.
On the other hand, these ships are hugely expensive to build, eat fuel, don't go very fast, and require large crews. With the advent of aircraft carriers, the need for battleships was largely superceded.
If anyone knows that some of the facts above are wrong feel free to correct me. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif I think I got the details right.

As far as I know, all existing Iowa's have been decommissioned and mothballed. I do know some of them (like Missouri) could be re-launched however.

voogru.
I hope I explain this to you so that you fully comprehend that what you did regarding Toadman's server was rude, arrogant, and just plain wrong.
I'm quite sure if Toadman wanted to post pics from his server he would have done so. It sure as hell is not your place to do so.
I never want to see a breach of privacy and impropriety like this again on these forums.

Simple distinction between ship and boat.....
"you can put a boat on a ship but you can't put a ship on a boat.."
ergo... USB Cole !!
