actually, it doesnt really matter who wins on the 7th, because our voice doesnt matter. Dont all of you remember your political science classes, its really the electoral college that votes, so lets say if bush wins on the 7th, gore or nater can still be voted in when the electors vote. But only twice has it happened that the electors didnt vote for who won in their state. so just remember, usually the polls on the 7th presuade (i know, i cant spell) the electors from each state to vote whoever won in their state!

Yes, why are some of you under the assumption that you are choosing the new president?

Bush with 51% of the popular vote, and 352 Electoral votes.

I'm just making that up.

I think (and hope) that Bush will win by a very small margin.

I think Gore will win the popular vote, and Bush will win the electoral college vote. What I want to know is, why the @#$% is the electoral collage still there?

You know, it would really be interesting to see the raw numbers straight from the polling booths. If we were truly a democratic society, the actual votes we pull would be tallied and the winner would be decided by US. The system that is in place now is the reason for such low voter turn out now, we all know that our vote does not count. If only two people voted in this election, you can bet that one candidate would win by 8%.

Rat,

I don't think the electoral college is the reason most people don't vote. I would even venture to say that most people don't know that it exists or what it does? Most people don't realize that it isn't a popular vote.

I feel that way because the general population misses questions like:

1. In which decade did the Civil War occur?
2. Who was the president before Jimmy Carter?
3. In what year did Pearl Harbor get attacked?
4. When is the presidental election held?

People tend to miss questions that I think are easy (probably most of you do too!).

I think the majority of people don't vote because they don't care. They don't think that the decisions of the president effect their lives. They don't think of it as a civic responsibility. It's funny how most foreign born citizens vote at every opportunity. Apparently not having that right at one time shows how important it is.

I think Gore will win in the electoral college by a small vote even if Bush wins the popular vote. I'm more concerned that Rick Lazio represent me in the Senate an Hillary Clinton should fall into obscurity.

It will likely be w this time.
Not because his lies are any better than any other politician's, certainly not due to him being the better candidate, cause he isn't.

Just because over the last 50 years or more this country has been electing one party to 8 or even 12 years, then the other gets their turn. (Peanut was the exception.)

Oh well. We always manage somehow.

Bush will win (hopefully)!

I too think it's time for a change in the white house. 8 years of one party that really is enough!

And remember with Bush you will pay less taxes and stocks will probably go up more!

Variable,

Not sure which school you went to, but I learned that big tax cuts at the expense of the national debt will raise interest rates and hurt Wall Street (stock prices will go down, a lot). If dubya wins, be prepared for an immediate recession. The Bush's have a lot of experience with them.

Mr.Goodbytes

Not always true Mike. Tax cuts can be very healthy for the economy, and will usually generate more taxes for the government if the cut is from an already high tax rate. We are heavily taxed in comparison to the past, so I forsee good effects. Second, a President does not cause a recession, and neither does a tax cut. The main part of the recession during Bush's time was in part to the capital investment in many government programs and also in part to the effects generated by the Tax Reform Act of 1986. The actions of the Bush and Reagan administrations and their respective Congress's are the prime reason for the prosperity today. Clinton/Gore have really done very little, but they (especially Slick Willy) were more than willing to accept the responsibility. Heck, Clinton mentioned it in his very first State of the Union Address. That's blatant ignorance and showboating.

I'm tired of an admistration based on falsehood and deception. At least with Bush, you have an authentic person.

If you had the choice, would you really want either of them?

As a Poli Sci and Econ student senior /double major, I thought I'd weigh in here. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

The 1991 recession was not caused by George Bush, but by the Fed's failure to properly forcast the economy. Since it takes about four-six months for a Fed interest rate adjustment or monetary supply adjustment to really shift the economy, it means the Fed must look at the state of things today, guess what they will be six months from now, and act accordingly.

In fact, if you want to get technical, I'm fairly certain it was Bush who appointed Alan Greenspan, who has FAR more to do with our currently boom economy than Mr. Clinton does or George W. / Al Gore will.

As to the Electoral College, it was instituted for two reasons. First of all, it wasn't possible in the 1700s to directly tally the vote from all states.

Secondly, it was seen as a buffer against the non-education of the people and the bribery attempts of politicians. Back in 'the day' politicians were known to provide huge quantities of alcohol to voters before they stepped into the booth (so to speak).

The indirect election process of the electoral college mirrors the indirect representation of the Senate and House rather nicely. And truly, for practical reasons, it's very HARD to count 120,000,000 million votes in ONE day.

And no, if I had the choice, I'd vote for someone else.

But who's to say I'm right?

The electoral college votes according to the popular vote pretty consistently. However, the electoral college system can yeild a different result than an out and out popular tally. This is not the fault nor intention of the electoral college, rather just a fault of the system. I think nowadays that a popular vote would be reasonable, I see no compelling reason to use the electoral college. My fear is that money will one day find its way to the electoral college, and that is where the true corruption would begin.

Tech, We can only hope. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Polls and predictions are all useless, I just hope for the sake of America's future that Bush wins, and we retain a Republican Congress.

I've taken the day off so I can vote all day long. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif Actually, I'm flattening the tires of know Democratic voters, I'm sure that Al Gore wouldn't want them wasting the gas to drive to the polls anyway. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif
