Couple of things, make sure the cd you are using can write at 8x speed, and make sure you arent over-taxing your computer while its burning. I usually find something else to do for the 10 minutes it takes to make a cd.

hrm now that you mention it i don't see what speed cd-r this is for. As i pick up the cd case and try to find the speed its nowhere to be found. Hrm.. interesting.

Ahahaha...coasters are popular occurances at first as many people can attest to, its like everything, ya gotta sorta "feel it out"...and maybe slow down your write speed till ya get the hang of it... http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

If it doesnt say in bright huge letters that it can write in 8x, then it probably doesn't. Check around and you will see some at the stores.

Also keep in mind that the 700MB discs are not as stable as the 650's. Usually it occurs after the 650 mark on the discs but sometimes before. Most drives and software say that in theory it will work, but they will not offer tech support for it.

Mr. Goodbytes, I was not aware of this valuable information http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif. I just bought a pack of 5, 700mb/80min CD-Rs. What attracted me the most, was the extra 6 minutes for music. You could probably fit another one or two songs in there.

Anyone actually use them as coasters? I do! When having a cold soda on the desk, they do their job by not letting the water go anywhere that it shouldn't. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

On the subject of 80min CD-R's a lot of firms now have added support for these discs' suggest you check you firm's driver page and look for some firmware to flash your writer. I flashed mine and I havent had a single coaster out of it since! (Touch wood) Also I have found a great use for those who have CD-RW which make coasters on a factory scale. It looks great when you cover the whole of one side of your door in them!! (I know I had the biggest coaster maker this side of the Atlantic!)

bear in mind that some game CDs have varying degrees of protection built in - CD checks, overburn, etc. You may need to select options like "ignore errors" and x1 burn to successfully make a backup of a game you have.
Remember, unless it says otherwise on the game, making a CD copy to play on a LAN is very naughty if you are also using your original http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
There are several good technical sites which can help you burn backups of your games. A simple search on Google (http://www.gamecopyworld.com) should get you started http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

Yeah, you have to format CD-RWs.
I've only had to do that once because I've only ever needed to use two CD-RWs and one of them came with the drive and was preformatted. I used the other one to transfer some files to a friends house. I had to format that one. I came home and deleted the items, I didn't need the CD-RW anymore at the time. It sat there for awhile. I stuck it in the drive sometime later and it said it needed to be formatted - again. Somehow it became "unformatted". Maybe because I didn't have info on it?

You don't format CD-Rs though. And many games alow you to make a copy to play over a LAN. Also, 80 minute CD-R disks are just as good as normal ones if you buy from the right manufacturer, I sugjest pacific digital or Memorex.

Actually I'm pretty sure you only have to format your CD-RW if you plan to use it like a floppy(mulitable writes, drag and drop, etc.) otherwise, I'm never told to format mine.

I think hallam2003 is right because i have used several cd/rw's as backups and never formatted.
If you are going to use them with direct cd were the cd/rw works just like a normal hard disk you need to format them first though.

Why would you want to use $5 CD-RWs in place of $1 CD-Rs?

wart - 'cause you can easily rewrite CDRW and if you know what kind to get and where to get it, you can get them for not too much more. If you look hard enough you can get them for 1.50 each or less sometimes - but then you compromise reliability sometimes...

Warthog: Haha, I have about 30 "coasters" lying around. I was stubborn, tried to burn something when my HD was a mighty 1.2G (350 megs free). Sigh, lots of Maxell coasters now http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif Just used some Scotch tape to cover the holes. I don't use CDRW's anymore either, too much of a hassle to reformat/erase 'em :/ 80 minute CD's are LESS than $1 Canadian ($0.65US) here sometimes.

I just bought a spindle of something called GigaStorage for $20 (Canadian$) for 25 700mb CD-R's at Future Shop. I have had a Plextor for a month or so, made about 40 cd's and not one coaster.
I have even locked so solid that I had to cold boot in the middle of a burn on a CD-R and once restarted I did the Adaptec scan disk on the cd and was able to resume and finish the cd. Gotta love Plextor, they make a **** fine burner.
BTW, the cheap cd-r's are working just ducky!

If you have high speed net access and you download alot a cd-rw is a great way to back up your downloads. I've been using 2 cd-rw's for about 6 months to do all my data backup's. I just pull everything off the disk's that's old "about once a month" and re burn anything I want to keep. Never had a problem with them. By the way I have also gone thru about 50 cd-r's in the same time period. You don't have to format your cd-rw unless you are using direct cd program which locks your cd-rw drive to act like a HD.
