The affected units are in Western Digital's WD Caviar 6.8GB per platter desktop hard drive series, with capacities ranging from 6.4 to 20.5 GB=>> http://www.compaq.com/support/techpubs/customer_advisories/DH990928_CW01_3.html

I have used several WD hdds made before then that were between 13 and 20 GBs and had no problems. Only one was a 5400rpm and it has had no problems.

All over except for the badmouthing of WD.

They did the right thing. They could have
Dummied down, replaced only the ones that failed under warranty and avoided the bad press.

Ever notice how HD discussions can become extremely irrational?

Johnboy, it seems as if your supper was foot, as it is still sticking out of your mouth. No one here in this thread said anything bad about WD drives, just a question, has YOUR's died? What you just got from me is a medium-low flame. What you gave me was uncalled for. period. no harm done, forget it. Welcome to SYSOPT http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gifDrVette

FWIW, my 5400 rpm WD Caviar 13.6 gig died within 8 months and I had to RMA it. I haven't installed the replacement drive yet. Am planning on using it as a slave, just in case.
