What have been your favorite Olympic moments?
I haven't really enjoyed this year's Olympics as much as past ones because of the tape delay, but there are a few memorable moments for me.
I liked Cathy Freeman and the other ladies lighting the torch.
Freeman's win in the 400. The medal ceremony was really moving too.
Misty Hyman's reaction when she won over Susie O'Neill in swimming.
The USA softball team's comeback from 3 straight losses to beat the teams that had defeated them.
Laura Wilkinson winning the 10m platform.
The cyclist, Marty Nothstein, taking his little boy on a victory lap around the track.
What did you like?

I liked it when Michael Diamond won his gold medal. that was one of the main highlights for me but there are lots of others too, but the main one is when the Australian woman's Waterpolo team scored the goal in the final second to win gold.

Yeah, Eric the Eel, nice to see someone kitted him out with the sharks-skin suit and gave him some lessons, didn't see him in the final though.
Also, being British, have to mention the coxless fours, Steve Redgrave winning his 5th gold, 16 years at the top. And then there are the two BEST overall athletes the decatlon and heptathlon, gotta be good at 10/7 events !!!

There were a few moments I liked, but nothing can ever beat the excitement, the suspense, and the terror when Greg Louganis cracked his head on the platform in the '80s.
(Was that at Seoul?)

Britain winning so many golds - its the best we've done for 80 years apparantly.
Especially Steve Redgrave winning his 5th consecutive gold and Matthew Pinsent his 3rd in the coxless fours - excellent http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

My favourite moment was when it ended, so now my favourite tv shows can come back on tv again.

I hate to say it, but I agree with Snuffy.
It could be that the coverage we had here sucked. Or maybe because I couldn't see the events live.
I had no interest in the olympics.

Frankly, I couldn't care less who can run the fastest, or who can lift the most weight. Whoopy Doo.
I live in oz and I reckon the maclympics were a waste of space.who wants to see a bunch of egomaniacs strut around {the black track and field athletes were the worst}as a tax payer I am glad we wont see that cr#p for a long time to come
And as for Ms freeman dont be fooled by the press her effort was purely political ,she dosn't have the support of all aussies far from it .

I really liked just a few moments.
One of them was early in the Olympics, when a handicapped swimmer was allowed to join in the 100 meters freestyle.
All the other swimmers took early starts and were disqualified, so that the handicapped man was allowed victory.
He had much trouble getting to the finish, but he made it.
He was handicapped in the legs, and this was by far the most sportsman like action I've seen in the whole Olympics.
I was really touched by this action of the other swimmers.

My favorite part of the Olympics was watching Rulon Gardner beat the undefeated Russian dude in wrestling and win the gold medal. BTW Rulon grew up literally across the road from my wife's parent's house in rural Star Valley Wyoming. Of course he's the hometown hero there.
Next, I would have to say was when Laura Wilkinson won the gold in diving.
Now I'm looking forward to the Winter Olympics in UTAH! It's less than 500 days away, so you'd better make reservations to stay in my basement soon!

Skai,
You Ausies made a bloody good job of the Olympics, best to my memory (and thats longer than I wish). After the over commercialised Atlanta fiasco, it was nice to see a relaxed 'laid back' games. All our competitors said what great facilities they had, and little or nothing went wrong (flame and vault not withstanding).
I dont know about Ms Freeman, but she did win your only track & field Gold though.
I have to agree about some of the 'stutting', especially the American 4 by ??? team, well one of them anyway.
Even if you didn't like of the games yourself, take a compliment for your country.

I'd like to echo Graham's comments about the Aussies - **** fine job putting on these games! The whole nation should be proud of their effort - much better than Atlanta. 'Stralia has gone to the top of my wish list of places I'd like to visit! If only NBC hadn't done such a poor job covering them for us here in the states...
Aussie, Aussie, Aussie!!! Oy, Oy, Oy!!!!
*ahem* .... pardon me...

What is "stutting"??
America kicked bootay in the men's and women's 4x100 relay if I recall correctly.

Thanks Graham & Matt I shouldn’t whinge so much my apologies. I am sure the folks at Atlanta like some of us Aussies resented that the politicians felt that the Olympics were there to be exploited .An example:Olympic Minister Knight feeling that the man in charge of the logistics of the games Sandy Hollway was getting to much kudos spitefully refused to nominate him for a Gold medal While nominating Himself!
As "country bumpkins" living 600kms from Sydney People in my area {nth coast} have put up with atrocious roads and reduced services up here, and been told it was in the best interest of the games. My highlight was to see Mohammad Ali the most inspirational athlete alive he doesn’t have to strut people know he's the greatest.Warthog us Aussies are a conservative people with a total black population {indigenous and others} of about 5% maybe it was just too exotic for us but probably normal behavior for you. Your right, The USA had a great Games and congratulations are in order well done America! skai

Just a typo..... surprisingly, (you can guess the correct spelling, if you read Skai's original post), and while we are on language, what is bootay, and why should it be kicked?
Yes you did win those events (and many others...well done), but did you see the spectacle one of the men made of himself, that was the point.
I promise to try to spell better.

Honest and open answer....
I would cringe with embarrassment, just like when our football (soccer) yobbos go abroad and cause trouble, I wish I could change my nationality, better still, theirs.
I agree colour doesn't matter, it just happened to be a 'black' guy.

I very much dislike "showboating", and I was embarrassed by our American Relay team. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif There is nothing wrong with emotional displays of joy and excitement, but I would rather see someone lose with dignity, than win with blatant arrogance.
The 15-hour time delay wrecked my enthusiasm for the Games. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif

the black track and field athletes were the worst
Why did you say "black"? It could've been anyone. Color doesn't matter...
hehe..."bootay" is **** or BUTTOCKS http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
In other words, in T&F we usually won by a large distance (what I saw).
You are right, they were very happy that they won. Who could blame them?
Honest answer needed:
What would you think if it was your countries athletes doing that?

Interesting reading these posts,it shows how different countries view the same moment in time from different perspectives.
Graham and I from two almost exclusively Anglo Saxon countries are embarrassed by our own countrymen when they express their emotions in an extravagant way. And Warthog finding the T&F athletes show of enthusiasm quite normal.is it genetics? ethnic mix?the way each culture has developed?Warthog when I said Black athletes ,that was their colour, don’t read anything else into it no {racial}offence meant.
Anyhow today Maclympic Minister Knight resigned from politics some of his colleagues are out on the town celebrating as we speak
