Anybody notice their WD 7200rpm hard drive being loud? Mine seems louder than it needs to be with a intermitent high pitch hum or whine. Just checking if anyone else has this problem too and what if anything I can do about it. Thanks.

A few months back a member asked the same, I forget the mfg of the HD. I told him he must have Bat Ears to hear normally ultrasonic whine associated with a 7200 rpm HD. Guess What? The next week by Maxtor 27.2@7200 started doing a similar whine, inconsistent, but nontheless very audible. Only happens every now and then, no explain here.. DrVette

Spencer, have you tried WDC's message board? I recall it being very helpful, with a tech responding within 24hrs. Worth a shot. I get exceptionally nervous and very cautious (backing up) whenever I hear a HDD of mine making noise.

I have two WD 20 gig 7200 rpm HD's and there is no problem here. The drives run very efficiently for what they are, and are silent.

you probably should check WD boards: http://service.wdc.com/webcenter/ps_wru/wdc/login.asp?uri=http%3A//service.wdc.com/mb/user/main.html Thats to there log in page. Good luck!

Yeah, I posted the question on WD's message board and they got back with me pretty quick, but they said that it probably was a vibration of some sort. I've got all 6 mounting screws in it and the hard drive cage is secured well.

dkozloski,

That was funny, but on a more serious note we've experienced this problem right before they go out. If you start receiving read and write errors back it up and replace. You might want to get a solid backup of it now. Not saying this may happen to you, but these were our experiences.

I have a WD136BA and it is new. It is generally very quiet but one day and a portion of another, it did make a louder noise as it was accessed but now its quite again and has been for sometime.

If your drive is humming, maybe it doesn't know the words.
