Okay, this is a follow up on Scott’s early post about is “Is even rough, or is odd rough?”. I want to get to the bottom of this, is there a reason why some people think of it one way and some the other? Does it say something about the way we think? What side of our brain are we using when we come to are quick decision on this? I have questions and I'm looking for an answer http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif
What I want to do is have everyone post what they think (Which do you think is rough and which is soft: even and odd numbers) and then follow up in that same message if you are right-handed or left-handed. Maybe there is a connection http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif Also if you are male or Female.
This will probably not prove anything but it’s worth a try

Even = rough
Left handed
Male

even seems to be more closely associated with soft
odd seems to be more closely associated with rough
I tend to believe that this has more to do with a persons philosophical outlook than their physical attributes, so I'll go a little farther to describe my demographic.
I'm a right-handed conservative republican male.

I think it runs deeper than our gender, whether we are right/left handed, etc.
-Even rough, odd soft
-male
-right

I agree it does go deeper than our gender or if we are right or left handed. But I had to start some place http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif Feel free to expand on that idea.

I seriously doubt that this has anything to do with personality. It has to do with the connotations of the word. Odd and rough both have negative connotations while even and smooth both have positive connotations. My guess is that forced to decide between the two, many people would fall back on word association rather then any personality traits. Having said that, I am betting that more people associate odd with rough. The same thing could probably be done with colors and numbers instead. Black/white--odd/even. I didn't pay any attention to the answers when I read the original thread and now I will be going back through to see if what I said is indeed true--that more people will associate rough/odd. Odd numbers are not bad, but the word odd is. Even numbers are not good, but the word even is.
Even though I feel that what people choose has little to do with personality, I feel that the reasons they give says volumes. This being the case, I bet most people could give reasons for both possible outcomes of the situation with both sets of reasons pointing towards the same personality type.

Having just read in greater detail (I actually read, rather then just poking fun at Scott) the quiz results. I think my theory holds the most water. A significant portion of the population said odd/rough. These people can not all have similar personality traits.
Another interesting correlation I noticed was that a significant portion of those who said odd/smooth or soft gave reasons for it. I believe that they thought more about it and due to that they came up with answer that had more to do with their personality then with the connotations of the words themselves. They probably spent much more time thinking about it then those who just gave an answer with little or no explanation. My guess is that if they were given a short amount of time to answer that question (<5 sec) greater then %80 would say even/soft odd/smooth. Again, this would have to do with the connotations of the words rather then the personality of the people.

it seems that the EVEN numbers are softer even tho they have more sharp angles ( skewered by the #4 )
but the word EVEN is rougher than the word ODD. ( based on sharp angles )
