There you go all that for not 1500, not 1000, not even 800. You get all this for the low low price of $789. Does not include shipping and/or taxes. And no I do not know for sure if it is all retail but it's certainly cheap.

Jeff - if you still can't find a retail Duron you could just go with a Celery system http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

I think I will just go with a Celeron processor. While the Duron processor may be cheaper, the motherboards for them are more expensive right now, so that evens them out.

As far as shipping and tax: If I buy from out of state (CA), I have to include the price of shipping, if I buy from in state, I have to include sales tax.

I'll be back in a bit to post what I came up with.

Okay here's the deal. The class is Needs Assessment and Project Planning. We need to put together a computer for $1500.00 or less that meets these specifications:

Motherboard must support and be documented that it supports a 600MHz processor.
Processor needs to be at least 600MHz
Hard Drive 20 gig or more, doesn't matter if it's UDMA 33, 66 or 100, 5400 or 7200RPM, IDE or SCSI. Probably IDE since that's cheaper.
128MB RAM - Pretty self explanatory
If the processor doesn't come with one, a HSF
Case - ATX, no other specifications
Floppy drive
Video card - He didn't set any limits on it either.
Sound card - No limits here.
CD-ROM - 50x minimum
DVD - No minimum
17" or larger monitor
56k modem
Mouse
Keyboard
Printer
I actually have to "buy" an OS.
Speakers

We're not allowed to use OEM parts, only retail. Can't go to Dell, Gateway, Micron, etc...

I've already found pretty good prices on most of the components at http://www.mwave.com . I am having trouble finding a retail AMD Duron or T-Bird. Can they even be had retail yet? If so, where?

And if you guys want to try and put one together for $1500.00 or under and post it here, feel free. Sounds kinda fun if you ask me.

P.S. Oh yeah, by the way, I started school back in July. Forgot to tell everybody.

Okay here's what I came up with:

Motherboard: Asus CUV4x - $116.00
CPU: Celeron II 600MHz - $142.00
RAM: 128MB Mwave PC100 w/Lifetime Warranty - $142.00
CD-ROM: Creative Labs 52x - $39.50
DVD-ROM: Samsung 8x - $95.00
Floppy: Panasonic - $13.90
Hard Drive: WD 30.5GB 5400RPM - $125.00
Video Card: Diamond Viper II - $129.00
Soundcard/Speakers: SB 128PCI w/speakers - $93.42
Modem: Smartlink 56k AMR - $15.00
Case: CasEdge 3000F Mid-Tower - $40.00
Keyboard: Logitech Deluxe 104-key - $14.50
Mouse: Logitech 2-button - $8.50
Monitor: AOC Int'l 17" 1600x1200 - $188.85
Printer: Lexmark Z11 - $74.15
Operating System: Windows 98SE - $95.00

Sub-total: $1331.82
Sales tax: $103.22
Total: $1435.04

I coulda gone cheaper, but we're not getting extra points for seeing how cheap we can make it, and I didn't want to use too many sub-standard components.
