I'm buying a case with a power supply I do not wish to use. Roy 08-06-2000, 09:29 PM Why do you not want to use the PS that comes with the case? What determines "absolute best" in your estimation? Would you like to buy my brand new 250W ATX supply? I'll let it go for only $229.95 plus shipping and handling. It comes with a lifetime warranty. Missing the point 08-06-2000, 09:32 PM 250W for $229???? Roy 08-06-2000, 09:48 PM Don't forget the $.95! Not bad, really, when you consider the price of Class D audio amplifiers. One dollar per Watt is the absolute minimum, and $2 to $3 per Watt is typical. And don't overlook the unconditional, no questions asked, postage paid lifetime warranty! tonym 08-07-2000, 07:29 AM Colonel C, Roy's got a point there! The best PSU will only be as good as you treat it. You can spend $0.10 per Watt for a high volume commodity far-east power supply or up to $3.00 per Watt for a "made in the USA" supply. The key difference is probably in the design and derating of components...ultimately revealing itself as reliability. However, if you abuse the unit and keep it at a very hot ambient temperature, never vacuum it's fan/innards out occasionally, and perhaps have lousy AC power at your locale (lots of spikes/surges), then best becomes a matter of random luck survival! I guess the point I'm trying to make is that for your (or our -- meaning computer enthusiast) purposes, the life-span of the PSU is irrelevant if you take good care of it as you'll most likely upgrade it before it hits end-of-life in approximately 75,000 hours or 9.2 years (the average MTBF)! Tony ctaylor 08-08-2000, 05:27 AM Persponally, I like 300 Watt power supplies as they have plenty of power for running IDE devices and the like. With too few watts and 4 IDE devices, often there will not be enough power to power-up those IDE devices so they can be recognized during the BIOS POST phase of boot. Roy 08-08-2000, 09:23 AM ctaylor ~ "often"? You have a short circuit somewhere! KillerBug 08-08-2000, 10:11 AM I like 450w units, I can't afford one though, so I use 1 250w AT and one 300W ATX. daveleau 08-08-2000, 10:23 AM I got an Enermax 350W dual fan PSU here in town for $55. I was VERY pleased sinc eI was about to buy a generic online for more money and at 300W to boot.
