Remember about 5 weeks ago, I spotted a dirt pile that I thought I could use as a jump on my bike? If you don't, here's what happened:
I saw this pile of gravel and dirt. It seemed pretty solid, if a little steep. I took a run and at about 11mph, jumped like 1.5metres. My friend then did it on his MTB with full suspension at about 14-15mph. I decided, really stupidly, to defend my ego, stuck my knackered old MTB in eigth gear, took the biggest run I could and took the jump at like 23-25mph and the moment I went into the air I though "Why the F*** did I do this, I'm gonna F***ing snot my self".
Anyways, the bike leaned forward and I came off after jumping 2.5m into the air and 4metres forward and landed straight on my head with no helmet and had concussion for 4 days.
Anyways, I'm pushing to get a new BMX for my birthday and I'm thinking about getting a bloody great helmet; mabey second hand motorcycle helmet. I'm wonder if you peoples think I should prepare proparly for it, stick on the helmet and old denims and give it a shot when I get my BMX??

Ouch !
Me2, I've been riding m/cycles for bout 30+ years.
I was drying out the exhaust system on my stored Honda XR350 which is stored at a pals house way up in the woods.
I was just gonna cruise down the dirt road and heat it up and put it back in the shed.
BUT,, on the way back I floored the gas and pulled a 1" wheelie while spinning the back tire.
Everything is ok, right, I'm doing like 20-25mhp in first gear at full throttle.
The first indication I had something was wrong, was the bike on top of me and we are travelling down the road, still at 20+mph.
Finally it fell off to the side and I lay smashed into the dirt. Much later I crawled through very sharp rocks about 120yds to his house and laid in the floor.
I had a hematoma about 14" in diameter on my back , I was out of work for almost a week.
What had happened was that we had patched some craters in the dirt driveway with good old Georgia CLAY. The stuff they make bricks out of.
The rear tire left cleat marks in the stuff a total of one foot. The bike had the suspension all the way out, so I didn't feel anything when it went over.
This almost happened on my Kawasaki 750 triple 2 stroke Superbike in 1975 too. On pavement, I avoided that one.
The Honda flipped so fast and hard it was like slamming a boat paddle against the water.
I've seen fast stuff, this was the fastest.
Never think you can control ANY machinery. I was cocky, been there , done that. Attitude of a moron.. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
but, I lived, lots don't ..

Nope, second time on my head with no helmet. I'm kinda worried that I've weakened my skull http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif
First time?
Cycleing along, bout 24mph, eating smarties and holding a polystirene container. Anyway, I was cycling with no hands and coming up to a junction. I went to press my foot against the wheel, but accidently caught it in the spokes! Bike literaly did a somersault in the air, I landed on my head and bounced on my head and got hit in the back of the head with the bull bars.

Oh, p.s.:
The area to land is made of three foot thick solid concrete.
Snuffy!

yeah, give it a try, as long as you have a good helmet on, and some cruddy clothes.
I did something dumb like that. I was racing a guy on my old mountain bike, and I was watching him, to see if he would pass me, but of course, at least ONCE in a while, you should look to see whats in front of you, of course, I failed to do this, and I slammed into the back of another bike rider. I flew off my bike and landed on my head. Lucky I had a helmet on, but I still got knocked out. When I got up, I looked at all the bumps and cuts on me, and walked my bike off. When I got back to me teacher (it was a school camp), I told her I couldn't move any of my fingers, and so I had to have an X-ray, and they found out I broke all my fingers and fractured my wrist, so that was the end of my school camp.
Moto of the story - Looking in front of you helps you see where you are going.

Ah the old dirt jumpin'/freestyling days! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif I had plenty fun on my old Haro! But I didn't wear safety gear until I tried ramps. I also didn't try to do anything quite like you did either! If you get a helmet, get a full face one. Do NOT get one with a separate mouth guard. If you wipe out on your face with the separate mouth guard, the thing slides all over the place and messes up your face plenty!! Good luck on your next attempt. Oh, and if I'm picturing the height of the dirt pile properly, WEAR A CUP as well! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

Toadman! The good ol' quarter pipe!! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif Jump OFF it?? No way man! That's NUTS!! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif I tried it for one summer. Only got as far as table tops. Everything else sent my bike flying and me on my back! So I gave up and stayed on flatland. My skateboard buddies were riding them pretty good though. And back then, if you tried to grind your pegs you would say good-bye to your axels. The bikes today are sweet, but I HATE those new stems...waaaaaay too low :/ It's still fun throwing a few tailwhips and rock walks around once in awhile.

Ok, the other day I landed on my back and my lungs closed up and I couldn't breath for a minute or so - I think it was severe winding, but it felt like I had no lungs - all I really remember is this horrible feeling of complete silence as I struggled to breath. I was able to breath a small bit after a minute and a bit more after 5 and sufficently after 17 or so. We called an ambulance, since was barely able to crawl in off the road, but it was only bad bruising to my back, knee and some other parts. Apparently, when I was younger my airways used to close up completly when I had any sort of injury and I'd go like blue and then the autotomic nervous system kicked in or something. Anyway, I never want to experience that feeling again, so I'm playing it safe for a while. Plus, I've decided to spend my money on wiser things than a BMX....
