I've been running resource monitor in a vain attempt to see how to improve the performance of my PC.

Could someone explain what System Resources, User Resources, and GDI resources mean and what their implications are?

Usually, my machine has the following:

System Resources: 36%
User Resources: 34%
GDI Resources: 40%

How does that stack up with most people?

By the way, I'm running a T-bird 750 with 256 ram.

Regards,

Jon

By the way, I have the following resources listed under msconfig startup tab:

Scan Registry c:\windows\scanregw.exe/autorun
TaskMonitor c:\windows\taskmon.exe
SystemTray systray.exe
LoadPowerProfile Rundll32.exe powerprof.dll, loadcurrentpwrscheme
Gravis AppAware Loader c:\windows\system\dbserver.exe
Tweak UI
PWSTray pwstray.exe
W3KNetwork RunDll32.exe w3knet.dll, dllinitrun
Linksts
Ensoniq mixer starter.exe
LoadPowerProfile
MSDTC
inetinfo.exe
SchedulingAgent mstask.exe

Which of these can I delete and what do they do?

I have no idea why some of them are there. Surely they are sapping my system resources.

Jon

You can probably uncheck the following from the Startup. I'd like another opinion, so don't do it yet http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif.
Gravis AppAware Loader Tweak UI
PWSTray pwstray.exe
W3KNetwork RunDll32.exe w3knet.dll, dllinitrun
Linksts
Ensoniq mixer starter.exe
LoadPowerProfile
MSDTC
inetinfo.exe
SchedulingAgent mstask.exe

Don't you have some virus protection software? That should be listed also.

I can't tell you exactly what the terms mean, but I do know that with your system specs, you should have those resources in the 80% range.

Starter.exe puts the fancy Creative volume control in the sys tray. Cancel it (or go to device manager, creative pci device, settings, and uncheck it) then go to multimedia and use the regular volume control.
The Gravis thing sounds like you have a complex joystick or gamepad hooked up. I shouldn't think that would need run all the time, but.....
You should be able to search out these files that are starting, find which program they belong to and then use the program's options to defeat any autostart features. I prefer that to using msconfig, but sometimes the programs don't cooperate.

Hi Jon

Here's a good article from WinMag that member bhess posted here about system resources and memory leaks.

Part I (http://www.winmag.com/columns/explorer/2000/11.htm)

Part II (http://www.winmag.com/columns/explorer/2000/12.htm)

Not sure if there's a Part III.

Here's another thread on the subject:

Sure will, BFlurie, thanks! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Part IV's link above is to Part III of the article though. Since I can't seem to find it, perhaps you will post the link to Part IV?
