I got a phone call interview today for a software development job. I think I blew it. It felt like I stammered around a lot, and I wasn't too quick in my thinking. First of all, the lady called me right after I had gotten out of bed, so I still even had the sleepy voice. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif I don't know what to think... I'm just hoping I really didn't blow it.

I know the feeling!

No matter how much your logical side may say 'there's nothing you can do now, just forget about it', the other side keeps on with the 'what if....' BS!

I guess the best thing to do is to try and take your mind off it somehow.... Are there many job vacancies in the field you wish to work?? If so, filling out a shed load of applications (and hopefully getting lots of interviews http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif ) may take the emphasis off a bad interview.

If the interviewers know their @r$e from their elbow (sorry, it's an English saying!) and they liked you, but felt that you did not perform at your best, then they may well invite you back and re-interview you (it happens!!). Otherwise, I guess, just chalk it down to experience and try to learn from this bad experience.

Sometimes, seemingly obvious things get overlooked - when I went for my job (research) they interviewed 5 other people - I was the only person who bothered to go down the library and learn a little about the subject first!!!!!!

If you got one interview, you will get others!

I wouldn't worry about it: Remember, you never know what the other person is thinking. I guarantee you that a lot of people are nervous and stammer about job interviews. Maybe you'll get it, maybe not, but your worrying and feeling terrible won't help the decision either way. Just roll with it. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Best way to go about it is to have a lot of career options rather than just considering one. Try to garner other offers from other places. That way you can walk into the interview all cocky and everything b/c, hey, at that point, they need you more than you need them. Give them the old "I already have an offer for $X, why should I settle for the $X-5000 you offered me?"

You're gonna do good, real good, sooner or later.. Why? Because you CARE. This is the difference between winners and losers, the corporation I've worked for 26 yrs has a saying, "Attitude is everything" . I thought this was BS at first but later recanted,, they are right. My present working partner isn't the sharpest tool in the shed, BUT, when you ask for help, he's right there with you and he makes a 100% effort. If you have an Einstein and the person gives 10%, you get a 20 IQ, if you have a person with a 85 IQ and he gives 100%, you have an employee who is worthy of his salt ration. Keep on keeping on and don't let the 28 day mood swings get you down. At least you can predict your changes in psyche, we men just have to guess why we're irritable.. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif lotsa luck, you'll go far. DrVette

Remember, be cocky but polite.
Be smart but ask questions.
Be grateful but don't beg.

Hey! Great job! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif DrCorvette is right on the money--there's an old statement that goes like this: "People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care."

It's easy for corporatiosn to find smart peopple. It's hard to find people who can do a job right and still remain on good terms with the people they work with. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif But you walk in with a good attitude and you'll do great!

So, what kind of software do you develop?

This was the best question I was ever asked on an interview. The answer is left to the reader.
