I'd go for the Quantum. I know they have a 3 year warranty on their drives. IBM only has a 1 year warranty from the date on the drive.
My 16Gig IBM went down last month (date on drive was 01 1999), but I bought it September 1999, so I should still have a warranty right? WRONG! I called IBM and they told me the warranty expired JAN 2000...I was like "WTF? I just bought it" and then they told me that I should talk to a tech and it would cost me $50...WTF again??? I already knew the drive was dead...anyway, I wouldn't recommend IBM's.

My sister's 10.2Gig Quantum had spin up problems(got it almost at the same time as the IBM) and Quantum gave me a NEW 10.2, no problem! Now that's customer service!

Hi baffled

IBM, 7200rpm, is my first choice as well. Fast and quiet, it might tend to run a bit warmer, but an extra fan will take care of that, and worth a slightly higher price, IMHO.

Second choice is WD - I currently have four of them. WD was my first choice til I bought the IBM.

Never had a Quantum so... no comment. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

I've got 9 Western Digitals on five systems. The only drive I ever had trouble with was a Seagate. The WD's are quiet and are probably the coolest running drives on the market. 3-year warranty also.

It has to stay in the three choices I mentioned to be able to afford the other itemms on my list, creative labs rewriter,K6-2-550mhz(that is the max cpu for my mobo)and voodoo 3-2ooo.Here it is all going to cost about $750.Thanks for the replies.

Heh, guess everybody's had a good/bad experience with each manufacturer http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif I'm using a Fujitsu(replaced my IBM) right now and so far it's pretty good! Either way, good luck with your choice!

I have a Quantum, Maxtor, & ibm. The max and ibm are MUCH quieter. Of course reliability and performance are key, which they have been the same, but it sure is great to have a super quiet hd.

I don't know if I would give up on your ibm warranty yet though, and would give em a call back asking the talk to the higherups. Thats bogus. No one ever buys a product the same its date stamped, unless its chicken filets at the supermarket!

Either IBM or West Dig.

The Maxtor is a horrible drive for overclocking (I have had 2 crash and the others had data corruption from overclocking the PCI bus to 35MHz). Even if you aren't going to overclock, stay away from Maxtor. IBM and WD drives are cooler and quieter. And they are faster as well if you don't count the Maxtor 40GB hdd whihc is the fastest (but still a bad drive in my book).

Off the soapbox now...

maxtor & WD seem to make the largest capacity even up to 62gig for IDE. it use to suck but I guess it gotten better then ever before faster and quieter. I didnt have a problem replacing a dead 2 yrs old maxtor 8.4 gig drive it took only 5 day for a turnaround. I just filled out a form on the internet and they gave me # to put on it so it was easy. quantum are more expensive and capacity are somewhat limited like seagate... the current one I have is 1.2gig it was about 240 buck when I bought it was pretty fast. I havent bought anything larger from quantum so who know. the most drive I bought so far is a maxtor, back in the old day when they had 2gig,3gig,4gig it develope bad sector whinin week to a few month due to quality control problem. as for WD they are pretty cheap like maxtor but they did have the same problem like maxtor like developing bad sector ok that was a few years ago who know they might have gotten much better. my next choice of harddrive is going to be a WD 62gig
im waiting a few more month until the price is just right. why settle for a 40 gig that run faster, hotter and cost the same when you can have more space a little slower for the same price?

the maxtor harddrive seem to take full advantage or uses all of the PCI bandwidth say 33mhz out of 33mhz therefore overclocking to say even by 1mhz will cause it to corrupt files and window will just give you the blue screen of death upon bootup. actually it prefer 33mhz pci or less to perform well.

I'm a little bit limited to what I can easily acquire off the shelf im my area, so my experience is mainly with Quantum and Maxtor drives. I've had nothing but good luck with Quantum's, while every Maxtor I've ever purchased (save one) has either been returned or replaced. I've also found the Maxtor's too be noisier.

In all fairness, my most recent purchases were over a year ago, and I've not had any experience with 7200 rpm drives, or drives over 10gb, so I can't speak for those. If I was to get a new drive, I would go with Quantum because of it's past good track record.

Just like on any given Sunday any given team in the NFL can win or lose a game they should have lost or won, my experience has been you never know with any given drive. I've tried 3 or 4 makes, and it's been a mixed bag among the same brands. Just make certain you back up data and there's a good return policy.

i usually get WD, seagate, quantum, IBM, and maxtor I say there all great. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif whichever you think best is just preferences. none are guaranteeed to work indefinitely with tear and wear it bound to fail sooner or later.

For me it's all WDC, They're really great and offer a 3yr warranty. Never had a problem with them. Then again, I've never had a problem with any hard drive http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif. IMHO, every major company produces a quality drive, so warranty and price would be my deciding factor.

But all the WDC's I've had run great, although I have no experience with ATA66 and 7200rpm.

Ruahrc

P.S. WDC also has a program where you send them your old WDC drive (as long as it's under the 3yr warranty) and they give you credit towards upgrading to a new drive! Although honestly I'd keep the drives because as with any technology, they usually don't resell for **** down the road.

Go for the Western Digital 7200 RPM, I think that Wesern Digital is the fastest and most reliable hard disk today. I have used ALL major brand hard disks, but.....Western seems to beat them all!
