My son's computer crashed due to a CD Rom problem. Scan disk put most of it back together (I think). Windows (98) won't reload due to insufficient space in swap file ("message SU 0018" in readme .txt", but I can't seem to get into the readme txt from dos to find out what to do).
Anyhow, it needs VMM32.vxd, which I made a copy of from my rig to a floppy. My question is how do I insert this back into his Windows via floppy through dos?
Thanks in advance...

xcopy [drive:copied file] [destination]
for example...
xcopy a:\VMM32.vxd c:\windows\system
Good luck. You must do this from a boot disk and not from the Windows DOS prompt (even if you could ge there, but it sounds like you can't get there anyway so... http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif)

VMM32.VXD is machine specific. It does not make sense to copy it from 1 machine and load it on another - it must be rebuilt by Windows. For the low down on what it is, what it does, and how to rebuild it go here http://www.infinisource.com/techfiles/vmm32.html
Or you could reload the OS over itself...

That happened to me a few times...
I started it in safe mode and, hmmmm...I didn't copy files or reinstall anything... I don't think so. It wasn't a big disaster because after I restarted it after running it in 'safe mode', it started right up. Something like that. Sorry for not being able to be more specific, but I was able to recover it without copying files or reinstalling. Good luck.

Hello
I remember damaging a vxd file. I went to my local Best Buy got a copy and replaced the file after deleting the corrupted one from Dos.
Just a tip If friends with PCs are not available

Well, it looks like I have nothing to lose...
(or he does anyway). This weekend I'll try to use my old .vxd. (I can't seem to locate it on the Windows disk...Hmmm) If what "Grunt" said is true I maybe lucky since our systems are very muck alike.
I am going to try to pull CAB files using the extract.exe in the crash disk-the syntax is always a problem - gonna miss that DOS!....I did a DIR from dos and everything is in a .chk file from using scan disk, so that does not look good.
Anymore ideas, please pass them on...
Thx2

Thanks for the replies...It was Toast!
The vmm32.vxd file wouldn't go in, no matter what I tried.
The cab files wouldn't extract..Win32 required, what ever that means...
A reinstall with Win 3.1 was a no go due to corrupted or missing file...
So we did a reformat and reinstall (fat 32)
Win 3.1, then Win 98 and all is well so far. I's always nice to hear the ending even if it was bad...
Thanks x 2...
