Biff 05-14-2000, 03:28 AM Anybody got any ideas on how I can prevent these darn things from flying in and messing up my balcony. Kookstick 05-14-2000, 06:51 AM AK47 SDT 05-14-2000, 07:07 AM I wonder if a plastic owl would work. The do work at marinas for some birds. thekingofpain 05-14-2000, 08:29 AM No no, not owl...rubber snake...guarantee it http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif Worked at a catering lot with a ZILLION seagulls as a kid, after the "exterminators" KABOOM! machine quit scaring them off, they got a permit to poison em...Well that stopped REAL quick, the neighbors were FLIPPIN OUT when the 10-15 lb birds started augering into there cars, houses etc...talk about a mess... Finally someone hoisted a dead gull up the unused flagpole, THAT WORKED...the next day they got a 500$ fine from the City for "displaying a dead carcuss"....ooopsie [This message has been edited by thekingofpain (edited 05-14-2000).] Warthog 05-14-2000, 11:08 AM Buy a .22 rifle ($150). Sure keeps away my problems with pests. If you're worried about noise, you can buy sub-sonic ammunition which makes about as much noise as a pellet gun but with more power (small "pop"). If you want to spend less money, buy a slingshot ($8). I use one of those too http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif. Worked pretty well once I got good at it (I'm still having troubles). But if you can get to within 20ft of 'em you'll have a good chance in making a kill. You can buy ammunition for them which are a either the size of BBs or a bit bigger. I use homemade black powder round lead pistol bullets. Have killed a few with those - very devastating. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif Warthog jl123 05-14-2000, 11:18 AM I would have to agree with the rubber snake http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif If you shoot them down there might be a chance that you make an even bigger mess. Were i live there are a lot of crows overtaking Plymoth Park. It looks like bats escaping from a cave. The sky accually turns dark in some places because there are so many birds. The trees here are white! Along with the cars, buildings, streets, ect. I just go out to my backyard with a metal rod and slam it down on the cement and scare them away. It's fun http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif I just i would share that with you http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif I would try the snake if i were you http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif ~Joel(jl123) barry glisson 05-14-2000, 11:21 AM don't know if it will work or not but my neighbor hangs aol cds in his fruit trees. maby kill two birds with one stone. barry Warthog 05-14-2000, 11:23 AM Nah, sub-sonic rounds don't even go all the way through 'em http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif. Joel, I'd recommend a shotgun for you. Yeah baby. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif Warthog jl123 05-14-2000, 11:55 AM Warthog you seem like a violent person http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif The thing is that i don't want to scrape dead birds off my lawn http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif Extra work http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif I'll just stick with scarring them away. I have a 12 gauge, dear rifle, .22 cal(17 shot semi-auto), and a 410. But they are all for when i go hunting with my dad. Which has been a long time since i've gone. I think my guns are too loud and might i add kind of pointless because it would take me thousands of dollars of ammo to take all of them out of the sky http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif I'll stick with the stainless steel rod http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif Plus i don't think my parents would approve me sitting in the backyard and nailing birds out of the sky. So therefore i'll stick with my technique http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif ~Joel(jl123) Faramir 05-14-2000, 01:14 PM this is one of the funniest threads I've ever read http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif ... and no I don't get out much lol Warthog 05-14-2000, 01:19 PM I've seen Alfred Hitchcocks movie "The Birds". Good movie but I wish someone would do a modern remake......with guns http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif. I'm really not too violent.... http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif Warthog jl123 05-14-2000, 01:45 PM I know your not violent just "interested". http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif Yeah they should make a remake of "The Birds". The second one is a little more modern and better. Yeah i agree they should have vultures attacking the city instead. Or at least a different bird. How bout finches? http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif Naw to easy. The movie would only last a few minutes. You could swat them with a fly swatter http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif Ah well they should figure it out http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif P.S. this is coming out to be a very unique and interesting thread http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif ~Joel(jl123) wtp 05-14-2000, 01:51 PM napalm would do the job..yepp nothing better than 10 packs of napalm to get rid of the little critters. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif wtp http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif Amarok 05-14-2000, 02:52 PM ok there are two methods that I can suggest. The 1st would be the cheapest. A couple of realistic looking plastic owls where they can be seen. If that does not work then there is a product available it comes in a tube (like caulking for windows etc) it is like a grease it is very slippery when applied and the birds will not land in that spot anymore. Or if you can shoot the things in your area using .22 cal bird shot is the safest. It will penetrate the bird but not exit the bird. Suggest a chest shot as the wings are tough to get through. Sharpy 05-14-2000, 06:47 PM Cool thread. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif I'd go with the owl's aswell. I used to work in a large bakery and they had a load of them spread out all over the place and they seemed to work great. Shooting will only work if your planning a 24 hour patrol as they'll still come back when you leave the area.(Am i the only one here that thinks this is cruel?) The grease stuff will also make as much mess for you as it will for the birds There are also electronic methods that work but are expensive and the birds get accustomed to them after awhile. The natural methods would seem the most effective ie: cats, dogs or other birds(falcons,hawks...) airports all over the world still use birds of prey to keep the runways clear before takeoffs. SysOpt 05-14-2000, 06:51 PM Shooting a bird on a balcony with a weapon is too risky - miss, and you might end up slaughtering someone below. Even still, you might get rid of one bird and scare a few others away, but the 1000's of others out there aren't going to know you have a gun so it won't defeat the problem. I agree with the snake idea - birds don't tend to like snakes too much http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif. Warthog 05-14-2000, 07:16 PM You guys are probably right about the gun thing http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif. It'd be okay for me because shooting (and computers) are my hobbies. So it would be more out of fun than to actually try to eliminate the problem. I shot about 15 red squirrels last summer to keep them out of the bird feeder but they kept coming. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif Warthog jl123 05-14-2000, 07:31 PM Hey warthog i've got a question for you. What do you do with all the dead squirrels? Do you just get a shovel and toss them to your neighbor's yard?? http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif Yeah i understand about the squirrel problem. I have a peacon tree in my front yard. Oh boy when the peacons come out the squirrels get busy eating every single one. They look like big ants on the telephone wires http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif But i don't shoot them. That's kind of mean. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif ~Joel(jl123) BBA 05-14-2000, 08:11 PM Just buy enough snakes to last...I saw a crane catch a snake and eat it down at the end of my road where I walk my dog. Hate to see a bird eat your prize rubber snake...hehehe thekingofpain 05-14-2000, 08:24 PM Here where I live a pigeon would look at a plastic owl like it would a plastic hippo...then poop on its plastic noggin... http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif raider rick 05-15-2000, 12:25 AM Have you thought about using cats? I have three, and I see feathers lying around at least once a week. (Nature's Way!) alondra 05-15-2000, 12:35 AM I hung those junk CDs in the tree and the crows seem to think they are mirrors. duh. thekingofpain 05-15-2000, 12:38 AM AAAAAAAAAAHHHHAhahahahahahah!!!!!!!!!!! jl123 05-15-2000, 12:58 AM Am i the only one that just scares them away? I feel so alone http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif Ah well! I like throwing down that rod http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif Yeah i think the junk cd's (aol free trials) are the way to go http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif I know i'm putting down my own isp but i'm getting dsl in a few days. Got the kit just need the gte isp software and ip address. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif Off topic http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif Now back to the birds. Did you ever see that movie "Birds" or something like that. Where the crows attack people http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif Yeah i'm afraid that might happen:0 Just get cats, snakes, cds, everything you can throw at them(you can take this literally). Just try everything. I'll try the cd's http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif ~Joel(jl123) Biff 05-15-2000, 05:17 PM Thanks for the replies everyone. It seemed to end up being a real humorous thread eh. Shooting is not an option, more would just come, unless I ended up impaling their carcasses on poles to scare the hell out of the others! I like the snake gig myself and I will look into the owls too. Thanks again folks, I'm off to sweep up, if ya know what I mean! Warthog 05-16-2000, 12:56 AM Joel, I put them down woodchuck holes. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif Up here in Vermont, hunting is very common - no I'm not a redneck. I don't talk with an accent, don't own a truck, don't wear camo casually (don't own cammo), and hunting is not my life. Computers are. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif Waiting for the summer to come so I can carry out vengeance on the skunk that sprayed my dog (square in the face) last year. I've got several loaded clips taped together, my 4 D cell Maglite flashlight ready and my KA-BAR fighting knife sharpened. Yeah baby. Just call me Rambo. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif Warthog Biff 06-30-2000, 04:34 PM Thought I'd update ya all. I couldn't find any plastic owles, (yet) got some stickey stuff to put on balcony railing. I was discouraged at first, I was the one putting my elbows in it, I still ended up with pigeon mess AND stickey pigeon footprints all over the ground, it's getting less now! they seem to land on the railing, jerk there feet around and fly off - good for them eh! "edited for adm" sorry I know there is a off topic forum, but I do like to close off my threads with an answer, when I have a fix! Combine the two and mix thoroughly (wear gloves). Put small pre-baked cookie sized globs on your window sill. I guarantee in two days you'll be "Mr. Lonely"!! Tony wtp 06-30-2000, 07:54 PM should i suggest Napalm again? http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif wtp Biff 06-30-2000, 08:51 PM Thankz for the link vfrxsw, I will use as my last resort - I just want to go out and buy it right now. I've been to 3 Crappie Tire stores, all the hardware stores in the neighbourhood no owles (bummer) Whats DCOM Tony, never heard of it (only available on russian black mkt) or what? tonym 06-30-2000, 09:04 PM Not Russian, but I can make it if you like: DCON = Ratski poisonovitch!!! Warthog 06-30-2000, 09:21 PM heh heh...I thought it was rat poison http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif. That would solve your problem. Just make sure that you don't have any pets in your house or neighborhood - that wouldn't be good. Warthog BFlurie 06-30-2000, 09:33 PM WartHog, don't let those guys discourage ya; your posts are entertaining. Darvocet 07-01-2000, 03:39 AM Use plain ol Alka Seltzer. One of those birds eats a couple of those and a few minutes later phoooomp, it goes off like a pipe bomb, except you get foamy gizzards instead of shrapnel. Just think you get instant fertilizer for your yard and the rass doesn't have a headache anymore. Warthog 07-01-2000, 10:01 AM Hahaha, Thanks BFlurie! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif Darvocet, I forgot about the Alka Seltzer idea. That would work because birdies can't throw up. The gas from the Seltzer just keeps expanding and expanding until....BOOM! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif Warthog SysOpt.com
