Every couple of years I build a new box. My old PII350's time has come for pasture. I basically have a good idea of some of the reqs, though any wise *** comments are always appreciated.
Athlon 800+ (just because I don't like Intel)
mobo w/onboard SCSI (2 channel) and 133FSB support (RAMBUS is out)(anyone, anyone?)
GeForce2 DDR (64M iffin I can get it)
Yawmaha 8X8X32 CDRW
Hollywood DVD encoder card
DVD drive
Luckily my budget is as big as I want, so I don't need to really skimp (nor am I cannibalizing any existing parts).

Sounds ilke you have some good ideas, but I think you are going to have some trouoble finding a Athlon motherboard that has onboard scsi. Also, I don't think there are any athlon motherboards that support RAMBUS since that was mostly an intel thing. (And costs a helluva lot more!!).

AMD = DDR memory
Intel = Rambus memory
I think...
And do me a favor:
Don't go the Rambus route. I almost bought my new comp with Rambus, but decided to 100% sure. I changed my mind. I did MUCH research on the memory and have since determined that, currently, Rambus is no good. It's hardly faster than PC133 yet 5 times as expensive.
DDR memory is not out yet, so you can't do that either.
Go with PC133 memory.

I have had good luck with Yamaha CDRs. But if you are gonna go SCSI you might be better off with a Plextor.
I don't know of an Athlon board with onboard SCSI either - you can always slap an Adaptec 2940? in it.
dont wast your money on the dvd decoder as you will not need it the sys you are building will run them great without it i have been using a dvd for more than a year now and have never use any decoder as long as you got over 400 mhz it runs great in fact i have decoder on vidio card and they play back better without the decoder

Do you really think that you need a DVD decoder card? With an 800MHz processor a software player would do just fine, unless you want to do something else while watching a movie.

No Rambus, bad. But isn't this where Intel is going?
Yeah, I can't find a Athlon mobo with onboard SCSI, either...
