hdd troubles

I have a hdd that a friend gave to me a while back. it is a Seagate ST32140A, it is a 2.11GB drive. he said it had a virus or something on it, i have tryed to do a format, but it has givin me an error part way through, cant remember what it is at this time, i think it is "fat error". ill run it again to get the right message. i guess the question is, it is out of warranty so what can i do to get it working?

Also kill and recreate partition - only 1 - FAT32.

no you cant have the magnets... http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif they are pretty cool though, i yanked some out of an old hard drive that didnt work... ill check out that prog, but scotter has helped me out a lot so i think it may be just about ready to work again

grunt: i checked out that prog. it looked good for diagnostics and stuff like that, but a new hard drive would be about the same price

Have you tried a low level format?

Virus or no virus. HDD's break down after time. You may be SOL. If you can't format it, theres not much that I can think of.

Hope this drive works out for you; and as for Spinrite - excellent program. It works on pretty much any magnetic media - hard drives, ZIP disks, LS-120, floppies; might work on tape drives, though I've never been able to try that myself. It was well-worth the price tag.
