Here are some rules for better writing:
1. Verbs HAS to agree with their subjects.
2. Prepositions are not words to end sentences with.
3. And don't start a sentence with a conjunction.
4. It is wrong to ever split an infinitive.
5. Avoid cliches like the plague. (They're old hat)
6. Also, always avoid annoying alliteration.
7. Be more or less specific.
8. Parenthetical remarks (however relevant) are (usually) unnecessary.
9. Also too, never, ever, use repetitive redundancies.
10. No sentence fragments.
11. Contractions aren't necessary and shouldn't be used.
12. Foreign words and phrases and bon mots are not apropos.
13. Do not be redundant; do not use more words than necessary; it's highly superfluous.
14. One should NEVER generalize.
15. Comparisons are as bad as cliches.
16. Don't use no double negatives.
17. Eschew ampersands & abbreviations, etc.
18. One-word sentences? Eliminate.
19. Analogies in writing are like feathers on a snake.
20. The passive voice is to be ignored.
21. Eliminate commas, that are, not necessary. Parenthetical words however should be enclosed in commas.
22. Never use a big word when a diminutive one would suffice.
23. Kill all exclamation points!!!
24. Use words correctly, irregardless of how others use them.
25. Understatement is always the absolute best way to put forth earth shaking ideas.
26. Use the apostrophe in it's proper place and omit it when its not needed.
27. Eliminate quotations. As Ralph Waldo Emerson said, "I hate quotations. Tell me what you know."
28. If you've heard it once, you've heard it a thousand times: Resist hyperbole; not one writer in a million can use it correctly.
29. Puns are for children, not groan readers.
30. Go around the barn at high noon to avoid colloquialisms.
31. Even IF a mixed metaphor sings, it should be derailed.
32. Who needs rhetorical questions?
33. Exaggeration is a billion times worse than understatement.

No, its part of a Mensa bulletin that was passed out about, 20 years ago http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif Still very relevant though IMO.

Yes, very relevant. But most of the time, I understand what the other person is saying despite grammatical errors. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

I just finished 10th grade high school. We spent about 1 1/2 weeks on grammar. I had to learn certain parts all over again because I had not been taught about it since 5th/6th grade. Fortunately I read many books so I wasn't a complete stranger to writing etiquette.

People.. Its not so much a matter of grammar/puncuation, rather than it is actually being able to read and understand a user's post!
There are several users of this forum, whom when I see their posts, I scroll right by, since I do not want to take the time and *extreme* effort it takes to decrypt one of their posts.

I know I seem a bit pensive. But I was just thinking. Was it Drieser or W.S. Maugham who emphasized economy of expression? If you've nothing to say, say nothing.

hd581: a good thing in my opinion. (although I know many would disagree; that's cool) he cried about wanting to leave so bad, so I guess he got what he wanted? please though, don't think I'm trying to rile up anything. some people here just need a little fuel to start a bonfire. just trying to contribute my opinions

I could be wrong, but it doesn't make sense to say that there is no grammar.
ppl may have horrendously bad grammar, but its existence is not in question. It is there.
I otherwise would have let this go, but I thought it was odd because you pointed out so many (comical) grammatical errors, I'd point out a semantical error of yours...
Now lemme go start a new thread: I am getting sick of the lack of semantics on this site!
(not to mention syntax and lexicon)

hehe, no wait...it should be me, I mean, not me but me, damnit, you know what I mean.
I was disappointed that there was no mention of the dot dot dot phenomenon...ya know...when you don't know quite know how to end the thought...or you're having run-on thoughts in your head that seemingly connect to the previous thought...but not really...ya know?

one thing that has to be remembered is that this site has become internation, and some who use it, are either on their second lang, or some times their 3rd. so as long as you can understand it what the heck. Just my 2 cents worth.

When I was teaching, I had a nasty habit of telling my students that I did not care about grammar. The whole point of language is to communicate ideas, and if I understand the point you are trying to make, then you've practiced good language skills. Needless to say, the English teachers at the school did not care for me much.

I've noticed the lack of grammers here too.
Tried to get mine on, she said she was too old for that crazy innernet stuff.
Maybe we should do some sort of promotion to draw some grammers in http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif
