I was just wondering, if price was equal between the most powerfull, top of the line laptop and the most powerfull top of the line desktop, what one would you get?

I would go for laptop, already got all but about $400 of a super kick *** system on my desk, and a 486 lasptop, so I would like the upgrade the latter.

All things being equal (not likely in laptop vs. desktop), one's computing needs would most likely determine the answer. Need to move around and be mobile, then laptop. Need expandibility/upgrade potential, desktop.

The majority of laptops have proprietary mobos. The memory and CPUs are specialized along with peripherals. This makes them much more specialized and costlier.

I like my laptop. Use it because I do go out of town a lot. But it seems to keep up with what I give it, no hitches. And I use it like a desktop when at home, external monitor, keyboard, and mouse.

For upgradability, get a desktop.

Laptop only if you need mobility.

i think a lot depends on your needs. at equal prices the desktop would definitely be a more powerful system. a laptop is nice if you need mobile computing power. the only reason i got one is its required at school. i would'be much rather spend the money on a desktop. my new desktop i built cost me 1/3 the price of my laptop.

If you buy a laptop you better get the $4000 top of the line machine with all the bells and whistles. In 3 years when its running really slow and the newest games won't work on it, you are to want to upgrade you will be stuck with that laptop. Compare the price of 2 laptops to 1 desktop + 1/3 for upgrades.

in other words...

DESKTOP!!!

Desktop.

I hate the "mouse" on a laptop. I also hate the small screen, the lack of certain hardware options. A computer I'm about to get will have a 800mhz, 64mb DDR Geforce2. Can you do that with a laptop? No.
