I have a new Compaq Presario 1800T notebook. I am very happy with it so far, very fast with PIII 700Mhz processor.
What I don't like is the fact that Compaq decided to partition the hard drive and make a 1GB "system saver" partition. Can I safely delete files on that partition with no ill effects? I can find many other things for the space, like MP3's, etc...
I just want to be sure that there are no critical files on there that Windows would need.

Sure but you will lose your Software support and disaster recovery ability. This can been a pain for us "power users" but it is a very handy feature for those that don't know their way around a computer very well.

mgordon99, I don't have any intimate knowledge concerning Compaq laptops, but their desktops have a similar partition that is 1gb that contains basically junk. I think it mostly consists of utilities that are useful to Compaq tech support people and useless to the owner, unless problems crop up. From what I've heard, it's highly unlikely that their tech support people would know how to use them properly, anyway. If you look, there's one program on there that is of particular concern to me, they have a version of Backoffice, I assume so they can remotely access your system, but that opens up additional security concerns IMHO. I have removed this mess, as a matter of fact, even repartitioned a couple of Compaq desktops with no ill effects whatsoever. I would suggest studying what's there carefully and if it's all Compaq programs, you can probably remove it and regain the space. Be sure you have your recovery disk handy and give it a shot. If it doesn't work and your system is like most of the laptops I've messed with, a complete system restore only takes 15-20 min. What do you have to lose, except the excess baggage? Good luck!
