Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : Task Sheduler - too much overhead?

I'm wondering whether I should have Win98 Task Sheduler permanently running in the backgroud, so it can defrag etc.

Anyone else do this or does it sap too much system resources?

Thanks,

Jon

I always disable it without giving it much thought. It's not hard to fire up Defrag or Scandisk before I head to bed on occasion, so I don't find it really necessary.

Same here. Every Saturday morning I download anti-virus definitions, defrag, run virus software, download certain data base info for my business. Just part of my routine. I never use the task scheduler.

I have some sort of disorder that will not allow any type of program to "sit" on my computer unless I'm using it at that time. This includes files on my hard drive if im not using the program. I don't know why. Task scheduler is a big no no for me http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif It has its advantages though if you need an alarm clock, or want programs to open at a certain time...but I have no use for it. Like said aboive its easy to start scandisk on my own....and kinda fun to watch.

Hello-

I agree with chipbgt- If I'm not actually using it (or using it on a regular basis), why should it be there? I share the same aversion to Hard Drive Clutter. If you actually find a use for it, the task scheduler is very useful, but I prefer to do it manually because how often do I actually scandisk and defrag? Not often enough that it should be automated. Plus the computer has to be running virtually 24/7 for the TS to be really useful. (TS cannot turn on the computer to do something nor can it shut itself down when it's done) This for me is a big problem because if I'm not sitting at my computer, it's not running. (except rare occasions when I'm overnignt downloading (stupid 28.8 connection....) or it's defragging and I walk away)

Just my two cents

One of the first things I disable, along with alot of the bloatware that comes with some of my other software. I've never understood why I just can't install Norton Antivirus and Utilities instead of the whole system works.

Chipbgt, scandisk can be rather hypnotic to watch running can't it? http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif
