Just curious is all. Was digging through one ogf my "drawers O'stuff" and found an adapter which will allow me to do so. Just wondering if this is a common practice.

the 486 that i had, had the monitor connectd to the power supply. Its just to save an outlet i guess.

Power supply outlets were originally provided for old monochrome monitors and may be overloaded by modern large screen monitors. Unless you are sure of the outlets capacity and what your monitor draws I wouldn't try it. The results might be blown fuses or fried switch contacts.

Is there any reason there would still be one on my modern 250 watt PS?

Because It was built to the AT standard that puts it there.

Most of my old computers (286's, 386's, 486's, P-75, P-150, etc) had the connector on the power supply, and I used them all the time with various monitors (provided the monitor had a female connector, or I had an adapter at the time). Should'nt be a problem....the connector is usually in parallel to the PSU, and you'll get the proper voltage, as will the power supply. Good PSU's will use a monitor connector with a built in relay in case of a power surge. Kind of handy with the old monitors that had their power switch on the rear or side, and were a pain to get at easily.

Hi,

Couple months ago I bought ATX 250W PS and there is connector for monitor as well. I am using it. Before it was 15" monitor and now 17". So far so good...

Hmm, that is strange, because I have the power supply i am using, and 4 spare ATX power supply's, and they all have monitor connectors, in fact, in all my computing experience in the last two years for all the ATX power supply's i've seen, I don't think i've seen any WITHOUT monitor connectors. And i plug my monitor into mine, and it works fine, i've been plugging my monitor into all my power supply's i've ever had since i first started computing like 7 years ago.

The "monitor connector" is a simple "loop through" of the incoming power. It has nothing to do with the supply. It's just like a "cube tap" or "threefer" you use to get more plugs into a single outlet. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

I've seen them with and without the outlet. The outlet is switched and does have a limitation which is usually labeled next to it. Most monitors should okay to plug in there. DO NOT plug in high continuous current devices like laser printers, amplifiers, lights, vacum cleaners, heaters, fans, or other computers. These devices will typically damage the supply, especially if they turn on and off with the supply.

I added a small power strip to this outlet - Into that, I plug in the adapter for my speakers and my monitor as well as the power supply for my external modem.

That way - by turning off the machine - I turn off everything associated with it - keeps me from blowing adapters before their time....

In my experience, some PS's do have the pass-through connector and some don't - depends on manufacturer....
