I'm sick of it crashing...all the time. And don't even start with the "use IE" because it's no stranger to unstableness itself.
Anyways, just out of sheer frustration (cause I've tried so many other things) I recently set my Netscape's disk cache and memory cache to be 0. I wouldn't advise trying this if you're on a dial-up connection. But I figured my cable's so **** fast I probably won't even notice not using the cache.
Well, not only do I not notice the missing cache, but it's FASTER! And I've been surfing all night (many hours) and so far so good...no lock-ups or crashes. Go figure?

There is a new release of Opera, you may like this as an alternative to the "big guys": http://www.opera.com/features.html
I've noticed that Netscape does not like overclocking! I've gone back from 4.72 to 4.61 ... maybe a little less locking up. I tried the fat, new 6.0 but it didn't recognize my existing profile so I dumped it. Maybe I'll give it one more shot.
The big question is ... "why does FSB speed affect the program? Not enough wait states? Too small of a cache somewhere?"
Worst of all, NS now is owned by AOL ... that suggests there will be an aloof "take it or leave it" attitude. IE? Not if I don't have to. I guess I'll be looking at Opera.

I tried the same thing with the cache in my cable modem, and while it did stop crashes from netscape, it will still horrendously slower than IE. It might just be my setup though.

Hmm, I gotta try that after I read through the rest of the topics here. My Netscape crashes waaaaaaaaaaay too much :/ I think it's mostly the JAVA stuff (the buttons on webpages stop working, can't click on links etc). I'll get back with my results...heh, if I can remember to http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

I used to swear by NS - but the crashes finally got to me. Now I use 98SE and IE5 built into it. RARELY crashes. I've not even installed NS this time.

Roy, my .02$. If you download IE5.01 & refuse all the "extra's" (even IE help), except for Java VM & Visual Basic scripting, it's not too bad of a heavy load (and it ain't my brother). I've not installed any of the updates or service packs either -- they're a waste IMHO. Haven't gotten any IE errors.

I've read all you posts and have to ask why is NS crashing so much on you folks?
I use NS 4.72 all the time and the last crash I can remember was about 6 months ago because I let my cache get WAY out of control. And I'm not an occasional browser...I surf several hours a day and download quite a bit and NS is my "mailport". On an average day I visit 10-15 different sites, and I purchase quite a bit online. Most of what I do is for business, so if it wasn't stable I'd use something else (besides IE!!).
I use NT 4.0 and NS 4.72. Any ideas why I'm seeing such stability and you folks aren't??

well i have netscape 4.73 and since 4 came out i get crashes with javascript. basically you can't click any links and no pages load. if you turn off javascript in the properties, everything works. but then you're stuck that way until you reboot the machine. lately i've noticed it much less, either due to 4.73 or the fact i got a new machine, not sure. what i do notice is that most of my javascript crashes come from the same site, ie IGN, and typing "javascript:" in the console reveals javascript errors. so i'm inclined now to believe that it's the sites fault much more than netscapes.
