Anyone help?

I have recently noticed within the past couple of days that my laptop is taking longer to load up. Having pressed cntl + alt + del, in the box it says...

Webmain [not responding]

...any suggestions as to how I can rectify this?

check to see where that webmain is coming from. goto start-->run and type MSconfig. Look in those tabs. if it doesn't seem like its coming from any important mission critical software, try to disable it in the msconfig and see if that rectifies the problem http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

NOTE: msconfig is only available in Win98 (or newer). IOW, if you have 95 or something, then you can't use this feature.


instead, you'll have to check it in the registry.
to do this, go to Start--->Run and then type regedit into it and hit enter.

then, find this key (or folder-looking think):
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run

also, it you might want to look in this key (as it may be different):
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Run

they contain what would be running, in case you need it.

i think i know what to do...

it involves searching your Win.ini file. as well as just doing a simple "search" of all your files and folders. also, do a search of your registry, as you may be surprised what you find there.

POW POW POW POW POW POW, Gotcha!! That was me shooting "Netsonic" down the ground wire to the great abyss in the Earth, GET THAT JUNK OFF YOUR MACHINE. There, I feel better now. well, i know a couple:

but seriously.... there are quite a few, but i really wouldn't reccomend any of them.

i would, though, suggest that you update your drivers to your modem as often as the manufacturer gets them out. also, check out the AT commands for your particular modem and maybe put in any settings that might make you connect at a higher speed.

also, call your ISP, and see if there are any alternate phone #'s for them. then, try out the differing ones and see which appears to be the fastest.

also, while your on the phone with your ISP, as them how many of their "connection computers" (or whatever you'd like to call them... servers, i guess, would be a good name) are dedicated to atleast 31,200 bps (bits per second). also (no matter how many that they have), request that they get more that have faster modems in them and that are more dedicated.
