Just out of interest, what size HD`s do you all have, or what would you upgrade to?

I`m not gonna flame you for having more or less than me, just wanted to know...

Is it worth spending the bucks for a 75GB HD, or would you suggest something else? I realize that it depends what I`m doing with it, but I tend to try different things all the time (video editing, cd mixing etc.) Just general advice.

Also, is there much difference in speeds of HD`s (5400-7200 rpm)? Does it make that much of a difference to spend te extra bucks?

Thanks in advance to everyone that will reply to this. Your time is appreciated!

Hey Techie,

In my 1st pc I got 2 Quantum Fireball's 18.2Gb 7200rpm.

In my 2nd pc I got a Quantum Fireball 10.2Gb 7200rpm.

In my 3rd pc I got a Quantum Fireball 6.4Gb 5400rpm.

I got something with quantum, I don't know why, but I just do.

Always had good luck with Quantums also..Right now I have a 9 gig 7200rpm, but my next system will have the 15000 rpm SCSI variety.

Say,

that is a very nice hd.

Not that I would ever buy it, cause 1st of all I don't have scsi, and 2nd of all, there ain't no frigging way I'm gonna pay 620 USD for a hd.

But that's just my opinion.

Yeah but by the time I plan on upgrading ( > year ) it will be the standard I hope.

Definitely go for 7200 RPM, a year from now, that's about all you'll find. It does make a noticeable difference.

The really good sound editing programs recommend using two drives rather than one. It speeds the operation. I suspect the same goes for video work. So you'll likely be better off with a pair of smaller ones than one (more expensive) biggy.

~EDIT~

I forgot to mention I favor Western Digital. IBMs also are top rated, but they run very hot! You can get a pair of 27.3GB/7200/66 WD273BAs for $300 plus shipping (I have one). One IBM 75/7200/66 will set you back $500(+), but you will save on heating next winter. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

Hey Ultima, how's the Quantum 10.2?
I'm considering a Quantum 10.2 7200rpm at Onvia for $142 Canadian bucks.

shadow ~ the WD 27.3 is only $149US at Pricewatch (http://www.pricewatch.com). I don't know how much more for you, but it's 2.7 times larger! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

My 1st computer, a Packard Bell 386SX, had a 40MB HD. Sold it in 1995 for $20. Replaced with 850MB HD.

Later used that in my latest computer, total of about 12GB.
1) 8.4GB
2) 2.1GB
3) 850MB

Spent about $200 on them each time!

I have a Maxtor 30gig 7200rpm and a maxtor 8.4gig 5400rpm. I am looking at either two 30gigs or 2 40gigs when I upgrade or maybe 3 30gigs or 4 20+gigs. I will need much of it for temp space for home movies while I convert them to VCD's and of course my MP3's.

Wester Digital 13½GB & Maxtor 6¾GB

And I'm running out of room! Over 50% of my total space is occupied by mp3s & Southpark episodes. hmmmm, that probably tells more about me then I should reveal. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

I have 13G on my first machine and 10G on my second. I don't do much with MP3's or video stuff, so neither one is even close to full.

As far as big drives, I've heard people say it gets hard to manage them when you have so much different stuff on them. Probably best to partition the drive into several units of manageable size, or get multiple drives.

Geez - how long would it take to run a thorough scandisk & defrag on a 75G drive??

Jad:
Nothing really. This gigabyte motherboard actually comes with a utility that will allow me to overclock it in windows. Pretty neat. It will also run a test and auto-configure the CPU for you at the most stable OC it feels is possible. Pretty nifty. I haven't really tried to OC it because the heatsink/fan on there sucks and the CPU is running between 104 and 110 degres F.

#1: Maxter 7200 RPM Ultra DMA66 20 GB;
#2: WDC 13 GB 5400 RPM Caviar;
#3: WDC 2.3 GB & JTS Champion 1.2 GB(?)

The transfer rate (7200 RPM) makes the dif to me.

Quantum Bigfoot 12GB - its got a lovely LOUD accessing sound to it too!

I'm no expert in these matters, but isn't there something about the cluster size increasing the larger the capacity of the drive? Up to 16GB they are 8KB whereas on a drive over 32GB they are 32KB. This means that if you have a lot of small files you will be wasting more space on a large drive as opposed to a smaller one. I don't suppose it matters that much however.
