I need your help, I'm trying to get a kid that has no direction interested in computers, and games seem the 1st start. I'm giving him an old PC and we are going to try overclocking,,, but I need a video card that has the 3d accelerator, something I can use for games like Diablo II, Also I need a hard drive around 10 to 15 gig,,,, something big enough to play the games. I would also appreciate any advise so if anyone knows that something else will work, (like I don't need that big of a hard drive etc.) please let me know.
Thanks
Surreal

Surreal,
For Diablo 2 and a limited budget, I highly recommend the Voodoo3. Cheap, powerful enough for a beginner, and runs D2 better than any other card type (save for the other Voodoos).

cool, thanks, how long has that one been out?
I take it different cards play different games?

Sort of, the voodoo series has glide, which is a proprietary and very fast gaming interface. Most games for glide work on other cards wither in different video modes, or through the use of moderately illigal glide wrappers (illigal because glide is copywrited, moderately because the only people that ever got sued for making them now own the rights). Voodoos are great because they work on anything (the voodoo banshee and voodoo 3 2000 that is). For a started system they work good. Also, they can be overclocked too, if you cool them a bit.

Thanks long hair phreek,
(hey I don't have long hair, I'm just a FREAK!) http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
I just need to find a mobo to go with the amd 500 duron now. I don't think I can find a bios chip for the one I have..I'm trying to get a little juvenille deliquent interested in computers, and it's working. We are going to build him one he can play games on. Maybe I should mosie over to the mobo support forum.
See if any one can help me fix it... thanks
Sounds like you've got a good start there. I wouldn't be too concerned with getting too large of a hard drive. 10GB ought to be plenty big. I'd be more concerned with the amount and type of RAM. For decent gaming I'd recommend at least 128MB of RAM and since you indicate that you'll be using a Duron, make sure that it's PC100 that is compatible with AMDs or a decent brand of PC133 - Mushkin Rev. 2, I think Infineon should work pretty good, too. Anyone else have any recommendations? C'mon folks, pipe up! That's what the forums is all about - helping each other out, right?!

Are you using a Duron or a K6-2? Duron's were never made below 500 Mhz. I'm guessing you are giving him a K6-2.
Unfortunately, I'm short on hardware--I've got a 32X-CDROM and 16 meg of PC100 RAM that I could let go of, but that's about it.

Hey, since you're looking for a bunch of stuff, I might as well recommend you to my buddies http://www.axiontech.com/
If you want good OCing, get an Epox 8KTA+ for $96 and a Duron 600+ for $40-55 and an Alpha PAL-6035 at http://www.puicorp.com/ for $31. You can OC these babies up to 1GHz! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/biggrin.gif http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/biggrin.gif http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/biggrin.gif Sorry I got carried away. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/biggrin.gif As for a video card, I think axiontech has Voodoo3 3000 AGPs for $75, but a large line of Geforce2 MXes as well. If you're interested in the MX cards, pull out their list and post in the video card forum to see which one is best b/c you get what you pay for. Oh, and 128MB PC133 goes around $50 too.
As for HDDs though, they don't come cheap b/c this guy in my English III class is looking for one to build his mom's tower with and is having serious trouble finding one for a good price. I guess you should check http://www.techbargins.com to find the best prices on HDDs.
Edit: Also, going by any large business is good too. Many of them throw out many computer parts like they were last month's reports. Also check for book stores with hardware/software books for cheap.
