f4m,

Here are a couple of "light reading" sites that you might find interesting:
http://www.epemag.wimborne.co.uk/solderfaq.htm
http://www.epemag.wimborne.co.uk/solderpix.htm
http://www.elexp.com/t_solder.htm

Hope these help...

Something the instructions usually fail to mention:

~~ROY'S LAW OF SOLDERING~~
It takes one second longer for the heat to travel up the wire to your fingers than it takes for the solder to set.

So don't let go until after you say "Ouch!" http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

thanks for the links guys...and Roy, roflmao...i managed to come up with a Weller 8200N solder gun rated at 100/140W without a manual, so i just needed some info. on how to solder (never touched a solder gun in my life)
thanks

Don't Shoot! That gun is dangerous!

Soldering guns tend to get much too hot! Plan go get a feel for turning it on and off alot. Don't keep it on just for the sake of its light.

Radio Shack has a tidy little soldering kit with a lower wattage pencil. It probably even comes with some tips for painless use. Well, almost painless. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

Yes, that gun is too hot, too large for circuit boards! A nice 30-40 watt iron will do nicely. Let us know what you're soldering and what you'd like to know.
I've been soldering circuit boards for alot of years and can unsolder & solder anything.

what i am looking to make is a baybus (http://www.virtualhideout.net/guides/led_baybus/index.htm) like on this site. the gun has a trigger on it, first click 100 second click 140 (im assuming). no im not planning no soldering circuit boards at this time. i was just looking through the garage when i found this one... i guess when i go to radio shack, ill pick up a smaller iron with the parts.

thanks

The Baybus is a cool project. I'm thinking of placing a switch on the panel to clear the CMOS. I don't do it very often, but it's such a bother when I do.

The fan control idea sets my thoughts wandering. 2-color LEDs. 3-position switches that select between 12V, OFF, and 5V to each fan. A spare switch while I'm there for something I've not yet thought of. The mind reels ... http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

And yes, I wouldn't use that gun for this kind of work. Also, the project as shown is nicely done and very tidy. It's ok to be creative ... fan/drive power connectors instead of spades ... green LEDs, cheaper than blue ... plastic tape instead of shrink ... etc.

Here's a great link to all sorts of electronics basics, including some soldering tips with pictures. http://www.us-epanorama.net/basics.html#soldering

I just bought a 15/30 watt adjustable iron through radioshack.com for $4.99. Unfortunately they were out of their sale solder.
