Finally got a CD burner not too long ago. I recorded a few music CD's to try it out. They work great on all 3 of my computers, my boom box, and my "big" stereo system. Unfortunately, they won't play on the factory installed CD player in my 1998 Chrysler. All I get is "error" on the display.
Is there a feature on some of the new CD players that won't let them play recorded CD's?? Or is there another explanation?? Anybody else had this problem??
Some earlier players won't play CDRs, but I would expect a '98 to conform to the newer standards. It's a mystery only Chrysler can resolve.

Have a friend with a 98 Dakota, and he has the same problems with burned cd's (ie: they play on everything but his truck)

A buddy had the same problem in his car stereo (aftermarket) and a friends new PT Cruiser (factory). It played fine in my Ford ZX2. He switched to a different brand of media and solved the problem. The troublesome media had a bluish color.

The problem is not the disk type, it is the lazer in the player, if it is not powerfull enough, it will not read the disk. This is very common in OEM stuff, many DVD-ROM drives still being put in new systems are too weak to read cd-r disks. This is also very common in car stareos, low voltage or "long life" portable players, and even a revision of the playstation. There are some tricks, though. In a truck, check the battery power, the cd player is designed to get as much as 18v into it, if the battery is sitting at 11v, the lazer is underpowered. In portables, use higher amperage batteries (I use 2 D cells in my portable that was designed for 2 AA cells). In cdrom drives, you can up to power to the lazer using a soldering iron inside, but be carefull, too powerfull will erase your cdr or burn out the lazer. And the same for the playstation.

I solved this problem for my Nakamichi car CD-PLAYER.
Make sure that you're using Write Disk-At-Once option (meaning as a single track and is CLOSED after writing is done). Once it done, your car CD will play everything you burn.
Good Luck.

A friend of mine has a Mitsubishi Eclipse and they wouldn't play on his car CD player.
Is it coincidence that all these car stereos are Chrysler stereos? (I'm assuming the Dakota and PT Cruiser have factory stock stereos - the Eclipse, I believe is built at a Chrysler plant with the now defunct Plymouth Laser and Eagle Talon.)

I use MP3 CD Maker to make audio cd's. All I use is the bluish colored cd's. Not the green.
My truck has a Kenwood deck that is 11 years old.
My Camaro has a Sony deck that is 3 years old.
My wife's car has a Pioneer deck that is a year old.
All three vehicles read the disks that i burn with no problem. The only thing that won't read them is my home theatre JVC DVD player.
Souns like a Chrysler problem to me.

Ok, had the same problem with my Sony 10CD Changer in a Ford Orion......
Used to use BASF cd`s to burn the tracks, but since changing to Traxdata CDR`s, there has been no problem.
The BASF CDR`s are of the Blue kind, where as the Traxdata CDR`s are of the gold-green variety...(Actually, they are called Traxdata Gold).
I don`t think it really has to do with the color of the CDR`s, but more to do with the quality...
BASF are supposed to be pretty good, but not so in the car on mine. Traxdata are pretty cheap, but have never failed......
To this day, BASF refuse to play, but Traxdata do. Try using different brands, afterall, they are pretty cheap (£7.99) here in the UK for a pack of 10. Around $9 US.
Also, try getting a CDRW for music. I have just got one of these. Works perfect for me, and it`s re-writable.
One other thing.....there will always be a cd player that just doesn`t like CDR`s. If you try different brands, and still no luck, then maybe it`s time to change your stereo. Most newish models will play them ok......
I would have thought that a 98 Chrysler would have been ok though! Of course, you do make cheap cars in the US...True fact that, but I`m still gonna laugh !
LOL!
PS. Dunno if this is right, but if I`m burnign a CD, and just after it`s done I put it in the car, it won`t play. If I leave it for a while (say, 20 mins), It will play ok in the car. Dunno why that is.....can someone explain, or is it just me, lol...

Techie Dude: They don't make cars cheap over here( check out the sticker price),they make cars cheaply!!!!! Esspecially the electronics
My best friend is a Tech for Dodge and you should see the computers and sensors, etc that they warrantee daily. Chevy and Ford are no better. Get em out the door and hope they last, some philosophy but that's what you get these days.

Ok, just to test my theory, I have just burned another CD.
I had some spare BASF cd`s, since they don`t work too well. I just burned a music CD on a Traxdata CDR, perfect!
The BASF one......well, it makes a pretty coaster, and it`s a talking point at parties I guess.....
As for my comment before, I stand by it, although a little corrected. They do make cheaply made cars in the US. What sort of waranty do you guy`s get ona car over there? You can get about 3 years easy on most cars over here...

Hey - thanks for all the replies to my original post. I changed brands from Memorex (goldish color) to Fuji (blue-green color). The new ones work fine.
