I am trying to install NT4 with Win98 already on my pc. I have 98 installed on c: and a lot of files on d: I want to keep a files on d:
Now my question, i have a blank e:, but NT tells me that i have no partion made reeady for it.
The e: partion is fat, c: and d: are fat32.
Because e: is fat i cant use it in 98, but i have heard that NT doesnt operate with fat32.
Plz help

NT doesn't use FAT16 or FAT32.

nt use FAT and win98 can read FAT but the best format for NT is NTFS but if u use FAT then windows will be able to use the hardrive to this is not posibble with NTFS
NT4 will not load on a FAT32 partition.
It will only load on a FAT16 partition.
The boot partition has to be FAT16, and the NT partition has to be FAT16 also (but the NT partition can be converted to NTFS during the install ).
That is your problem, you will have to run fdisk to repartition the FAT32 partitions back to FAT16 before you can install NT4.
NT5 or W2K does not have any file systems limitations and will load on any FAT or NTFS partitions.

NT works fine on FAT16, and even if you tell it to install on NTFS it will format the drive to FAT16 and then convert it to NTFS when it boots the first time.
I like keeping the NT OS on a FAT16 partition because then you can go in and muck around with a DOS boot disk if things get weird.
Also, when you move it to NTFS it "reserves" a substantial portion of the drive for it's file system, which it does not do with FAT16.
