This poll is for those of us who leave our computers on all the time. I'm trying to get a feel for what's normal.

Please state your answer along with your operating system. Explain if there are circumstances.

I'll start by sharing my strategy & answer:
I keep track of this on my calendar. Every time I reboot, I circle the date. Each reboot on the same day gets another circle around the date.

I average rebooting once a day on my Win98 machine.

I average about

EDIT-sorry had to reboot.

Like I was saying I

Edit-.....too many times. in win98 whenever I have to change any kind of setting or add new software. With win2k its more like once a week. but if I dont change anything, win2k will run smoothly infinitum.

Usually I will reboot my Win98 boxes about once a week just to stave off crashes due to low system resources and I'm getting ready to do backups or something critical.

On my Win2K boxes they only get rebooted when some Software install or Update REQUIRES the reboot! Last week when Socalgal and I were testing out AV(antivirus) programs the box I was running had been up for almost 90 days or so without a single reboot http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Sometimes I run 24/7, sometimes I reboot a dozen times in an evening. It depends on what I'm doing.

Left running, the OS can recycle a glitch and it "grows". The tendency of W98 to "heal" on a restart ~ new Registry backup, etc. ~ suggests it's a health-realted practice.

I reboot only when changing OS's, sometimes 2 or 3 times a day. Then again I have run W2K two weeks without a reboot.

Sometimes I can get away with once in a couple of days, sometimes I need a reboot seconds after hitting my desktop. It depends on how my system and W98 are feeling that day. It's surprisingly healthy and happy today...

On my NT 4.0 systems (8 of them now), I haven't rebooted in months, with the exception of the recent BID upgrade fiasco that would CRASH the systems unexpectedly!

The only other time I had to intentionally reboot an NT 4.0 system was when the graphics card in a system decided to go flaky rather than outright die.

The Linux box hasn't been rebooted since the memory was upgraded about 5 months ago!

The Win 95 and 98 machines need to be rebooted around twice a day, depending upon activity.

Love that NT 4.0!!!

OK guys, beat this: I have a Digital Unix box here at work, that's been up for 532 days and still going strong ! As for my personal boxes, my Linux box has so far been up for 4 months now. I only BOOT my windoze box when I need to use it.

I shut down every night and reboot every morning. Is this wrong?

I do the same...everynight on all my computers. Wrong? All works well and always has. It's like leaving a light on when nobody is there...it just bugs me.

I usually don't reboot, unless an installed app says to...I leave my comp on all the time too. BUT, since stupid Netscape keeps crashing on me...I usually reboot when Netscape stops working(none of the buttons work etc).

W98, Daily, at least. On and off about three times a day. If I'm not using it, it's OFF.. DrVette ps, I save 360 watts of power when Off

BTW I don't do it to save power. I'm on a LAN and I don't run any firewall or virus protection. I like to know whats going on so If I leave for like more than an hour or so I turn it off.

i have two computers, the one running w95 (and the oldest) has to get rebooted about every day for locking up. argh! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif But, my other machine that I built, that runs w98, only gets rebooted once a week, and that's usually on Friday afternoon because I schedule it that way.

c:/> uptime /a

Current System Uptime: 41 day(s), 18 hour(s), 43 minute(s), 57 second(s)
Since 2000-6-16:

Total Reboots: 83
Mean Time Between Reboots: 0.50 days
Total Bluescreens: 12
Total Application Failures: 10

So I reboot twice a day in average, not bad for a M$ Os, huh?
