Saw this in PC Magazine this month. Go to www.grc.com (http://www.grc.com) and follow the instructions for the firewall test. They'll check your system & let you know where you have weaknesses that a hacker could exploit.
I run BlackIce and they couldn't get to me at all. My computer was in "stealth" mode; essentially invisible to the hacking machine.

Pretty cool http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

Tried that with Zone Alarm on and couldn't see me.
Then tried it with it off and still couldn't see me.
Anyone know if that REALLY works?

Yes, without Zonealarm, the thing said that all my ports were present, but closed. With Zonealarm at High security, they all reported as being in Stealth mode - that the computer's ports basically weren't even there.

The first time I visited grc, they knew my computers name and they were able to see every drive on my home network, and listed the contents of each drive. I was scared to death. I followed their advice and changed my network protocol to NetBEUI. They were still able to identify my computer and could see my ports, but they were unable to get any information from my pc.

Using TCP/IP as a network protocol is VERY dangerous without the use of a firewall.

I've since installed ZoneAlarm and now they can't see anything except my IP address.

I'm a believer!

here is a link to one of the other topics that posted the grc link.

It is a good site, but read the fine print on the page. The site only tests the most commonly used ports.

might be helpful if I actually put the link in.....

Is there any way to test the ports that are not the most common? I know grc is talking about setting up a scanner that scans 65K ports at once, but he has said that for some time now. I have used ZA since it came out and have been happy, except when ZA screws up and blocks all traffic on my cable modem. ZA is also the first program that goes when my system becomes unstable during OCing. This is both good and bad. Good b/c it tells me to back my system down 1 fsb point, bad when I am gaming and it knocks me out of my game right before I take someone's head off in TFC. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

You can also download the greatest hard drive utility ever written: SpinRite. Steve Gibson is the man behind grc.com.

You can check all you're ports with superscan 2.06, you can download it from tucows or cnet.
There are some list in it with the most common Trojan ports en other ports.
Its also very fast.

I've known about that site for a while now and I think it's great. I also think that Zone Alarm is a great firewall. All of my ports tested stealth. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

I just tested my pc too, and with zone alarm enabled it is all stealth and there is supposed to be no evidence whatsoever that a port or even a pc exists at that ip address.

Cool, fine with me.

Phew!

I finally got evidence that my firewall is working. I`ve always had a firewall installed, but never knew how secure it was, thanks for the URL.....

BTW, I use Norton Internet Security 2000. It`s really just a firewall (Anti Virus 2000 comes with it). It can remove those annoying banner ads too (like the one at the top of the screen now). Oh, and parental controls are a plus...

If you need a Firewall and you also need Virus protection, I`d recommend Norton Internet Security 2000. But, if you just need a firewall, go for Zone Alarm.

Those so called "annoying banners" especially the one at the top is what pays for this great site. Without advertising most sites would not be free. Kind of like Network TV. Click on them a few times a week. I believe they generate income just from clicks.
