I am going to be setting up a new computer here soon. Well, as soon as i can read a review of the production version of the asus A7V. Anyway, i want to put a good DVD player in the computer to watch movies on my TV. Can anyone suggest a good DVD setup to use? Thank you for any help.

Hi,

I also have the Pioneer 6x and I am very happy with it.

I am not planning to upgrade it for 3 reasons:
- it is a zone free !!! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
- it's fast enough for DVD movies
- I have an Asus 50x CD-rom if I want more speed http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

i think it is about time someone gave a suggestion that is not a pioneer. Though it is a good drive. I have a Toshiba SD-m1402 12XDVD 40Xcd which i think is absolutely great. Playback quality through my ATI card is first class.
I think the pioneer is the fastest drive available at the moment but the speed isn't really all that necessary. A 6XDVD reads data from a DVD disc at abou the same rate as a 40 speed Cd -rom if i remember correctly (i might be wrong) so as you can see even a relatively "slow" DVD drive is still very fast.
look for added features like quality, if it is region free (SD-M1402 is now patchable to be region free) etc. Both drives are however v good and you won't be upset with either.

Hi

It can play zone 1 DVD (USA), zone 2 DVD (Europe) and zone 3,4,5 and 6...

It can play any DVD from anywhere !

Zone free or region free or RPC-1 mean that the drive can play DVDs from anywhere around the world and are not only limited to playing movies from your region. i.e. the States, europe etc.
It is a way that the movie companies had to make your only able to buy movies from where you live so you could be able to get cheaper imports from around the world. And would have to wait till the proper release date to see certain films.
Some drives are region free and most nowadays have some sort of work around to make them region free. There are a lot of nice people hacking bioses for the rest of us who don't know how to do it. it is worth however checking htat the drive you want is either region free of patchable as it will let you watch a whole lot more films.
