Since I got a job a few months ago, I have been constantly upgrading my system to a semi-decent one, now it is complete. Here are the specs :

Intel Pentium III 500 @ 575
128mb PC100 SDRAM
Abit BF6
Asus 32mb V6600 Geforce
Seagate 10.2gb
IBM 6.4gb
Aopen 6x DVD / 32x cd-rom
Toshiba 32x cd-rom
Aopen AW744 PCI Soundcard
PCI 100mb Network Card
ISA 10mb Network card
IBM P50 15" Monitor
Direct-Com External 56kb
Plustek Opticam 300U USB Internet Camera
Turbo-Media Multimedia Keyboard
Microsoft USB Intellimouse Optical
Saitek Megapad
Ture Essence H/d Caddy
Full tower

I just bought a 10.2gb h/d and a P3 500 three days ago. I know lots of you guys with your geforce 2's and Voodoo 5's would laugh at this system, but it is all i can afford, and it is basically complete, and I don't know what to save up for anymore, any ideas?

In some ways your system is better then mine, so I don't think you have anything to complain about.
My system is:

Athlon 650
Msi 6167 motherboard
256Mb pc100 ram cl2
Tnt2 at 170/190
Quantum 18.2Gb 7200rpm, 2 times
100Mbit ethernet card 2 times
Diamond mx300 soundcard
2 satelite speakers 120W each
1 300W woofer
Lite on 48x cdrom
Sony 4x4x24 cd rewriter
17" monitor
Aopen big tower

It's a nice system, but certainly not the best.

I agree with GZ3 - you can't run 2 network cards on a regular PC - Rip out the 10 isa nic and toss it.... Once you buy a hub, pick out an auto-sensing 10/100 minihub as there will be a lot of 10baset stuff out there for years to come....

I recommend the netgear DS104 - you can get them at Amazon for $64 plus delivery - It has an uplink port so you can link to other networks easily. I own two myself.

Otherwise, you have a nifty little system there.

I assume you are running win98 to be able to use the USB equipment. I don't care for ABIT myself, I see too many posts for help with that mobo manufacturer to touch them....

CONGRADULATIONS on the external modem - fewer conflicts and you can reset it without powering down your entire system. You can also see the LED's to tell what's happening without opening another window on your PC.

I think you wasted money on the mouse. Remember that when you have to go into safe mode to fix things - your USB devices will not work - that now includes your mouse. I'd sell it - pick up a MS or logitech wheel-mouse and just use the PS/2 port for it.

Not sure what the megapad is, doesn't sound like something I'd use.

Thing you left out was the power supply - You have a LOT of stuff installed - I'd recommend you have a 300watt power supply to juice your system with....

Next - add fans - you've got a LOT fo stuff running in there - it probably has a higher than average heat load. Get them new - a used fan is like a used oil filter - you can't be sure it won't let you down tomorrow....

If I were you, my shopping list would include the following -

good used 17" monitor - manufacture date no later than 1996. I prefer HP Ultra 1280's myself

replace the Toshiba CD-ROM drive with a burner - preferably an HP. Your DVD will run the CD's fine if you decide to sell it to afford something else you want.

Not sure what your mobo is rated for, but if it can handle it, eventually upgrade the processor to a 600 or 700mHz processor as the price on those comes down.

Again - if the mobo can handle it, think of getting 128MB of PC133 RAM.

Have fun -

Hey, thanx for the tips Axel http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
I have a 100mb network card in there, cause when i go to one of my friends house who runs linux, he likes to transfer at no slower than 100mb/sec, so i use that. Otherwise, with all my other friends who run windows, i play games etc with the 10mb/sec, cause it is a cool little card that works instantly.

I run Win2k, but my internet camera doesn't work with Win2k, but I have WinME installed on my 6.4gb, so if I want to use anything that doesn't work in Win2k, I boot off my 6.4gb.

I love my Intelli mouse optical, because I had a mouse with a mouseball b4, and I got sick of cleaning it. Plus, the extra two buttons on the intelli mouse optical are really handy.

I only have a 250watt power supply, but it seems to handle everything well.

Oh yeah, the megapad sux, but I thought i'd mention it anyway, I only used it for Starlancer. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

I love my Abit m/b, cause I can overlock in 1mhz increments after 83mhz, plus, it goes all the way up to 200mhz.

I think I will buy a 17" monitor actually, but it will have to go into 1600x1200, so I can play games like Close Combat 4 and Quake2 in that res.

You cannot use two nics in a pc? Since when...

Hey not a bad pc, building them is always more fun than buying it. And at least you know you can upgrade without any real problems.

I can't run two network cards in my PC?? Glad I read that! I guess I need to take the two 3Com 3C905's 10/100 cards out of my computer....even though they are working JUST FINE! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif Just had to be a smart ***. You can run two NIC's in one computer. I have one for my cable modem and one for my network. works 100% just fine. I have them both running with the IP's statically assigned because they had some problem finding the DHCP server, but it works!

I use two NICs in W98 with no problems. They sure suck up the IRQs quickly, but they're nice and stable.
