Have a Compaq pressario 5726 with a pentium III 500 mhz katmai.
A motherboard based on the via Apollo 693 chip set.
My question is, is it possible to run a pentium III 850 mhz copper mine or do i have to stick on the .25 micron pentium.
I saw some jumpers on the mobo where I can set the frequencies with.
It now runs on 100 MHz and there are 2 settings left out of seven.(maybe its 133 MHz or 150 MHz bus speed).
Does anybody know this.

Check the Compaq website, they have some pretty good info on that unit although I couldn't find a detailed description of the jumpers other than they call them "frequency multiplier jumpers".

In my experience, Compaq computers are very proprietary and are very limited as to processor upgrades. If you want flexibility and upgradability you pretty much have to build your own, or at least stay away from the big names like Compaq, HP, etc. The fastest processor used in the 5700 series is a PIII 600, so that will probably be your limit.
