im having lock up problems with my new processor and mobo.if i enable agp 2x mode, q3 just freezes.but if i swith to 1x mode everythings are normal.i have no problem enabling 2x mode in d3d.any suggestion?

my spec is:
athlon 650 with biostar mobo,creative geforce ddr,sb live x-gamer,seagate 28gig hdd,toshiba cd,hitachi dvd,kingston nic,3com modem,win 98, and 250w power supply.

could it be my powersupply causing this problem?

Is it only Quake 3 that locks up. Have you tried anyother games?

Other then that just make sure you have all the latest drivers for all hardware.

I had a similar problem with a G force to. It turned out that I had a bad card.

I have exactly the same problem on my system:

K6-2 550
192MB PC100 RAM
TNT2, viper v770
SonicVortex2
Via mvp3 mainboard

It stops happening if I disable a BIOS setting (DRAM Page-Mode I think but I'll check).

However the resulting performance hit is greater than any benefit received from AGP 2X.

If you find a better solution I would be very interested.

Good luck.

what kind of power supply do you have? If it is a 250 watt PS, I'd bet my left arm that that is your problem. Many Athlon CPU's require 300 watt PS as they are power hungry. And when they suck up power, for some reason, the AGP slot is robbed of much needed power. Switch to a 300 watt PS ($29.99 at Compu USA) and I bet everything works.

I started having the very same problem (on my Asus P3B-F, P3 933MHz equipped M/B and GeForce DDR) when I enabled the "sideband addressing" AGP mode.

Disabling it made the problem (apparently) disappear.

Hope to have helped you all.

GeForce cards are power hungry. without a 300w psu or higher I'd blame it on that. this problem has toned down a lot in the GeForce2 GTS because the chip size was decreased, in turn decreasing the power used up and heat given off. the price difference is only like $70 so if I were you I'd sell that card and get a GTS...

300W is a bit high.
250W or even 200W should be fine.

My power supply is a 250W unit and I have a P3 933MHz, 4 x 7200rpm HDs and 1 x 10000rpm HD, a Plextor 40MAX and a PX12/4/32 CDRW, a GeForce DDR and all the 6 PCI slot of my P3B-F full up.
Everything works ok.

I am an electrical engineer and you can trust me. If you want, of course.
Anyway you are free to connect a power plant to you PC (to the 20kV branch...).

Any question welcome.

Entity: liljohn has an Athlon, and you have a PIII. The difference is that Athlons require more power than ANY Pentium processor. If i were liljohn i would handle the situation in this order:

1. 300 watt power supply

2. download the newest detonator 5.22 reference drivers for the video card

3. download the newest opengl drivers from www.opengl.com. (http://www.opengl.com.)

4. download a "wrapper" program for opengl applications at: www.glideunderground.com (http://www.glideunderground.com)

5. Decrease your monitor refresh rates to something below 65KHz.

Hope this helps.

Correction:

The wrapper program is for Glide applications.

Did you read what I have installed in my PC ?
Furthermore a P3 933MHz (now overclocked to 975MHz) draws more power than an Athlon 650.

I think the problem could be the power supply, meaning it could be not working properly, but it is more likely to reside in drivers' conflicts or something like this.

I had the very same problem with Quake3 and it was an AGP issue. Now it is completely solved.

If possible, trying to swap the Athlon with a P3 (at least 933Mhz), could be a good test.
The drawn power is approx. the same and I am sure that all the problem will disappear.
The Athlon is a very good processor, but has still few compatibility issues. And well hidden...

thanks for replies ppl.it was my sh***y mobo causing the problem.soon as i upgraded to athlon 750 and asus k7v, no more freezes.also i can run agp 4x with no problem.oh there is 1 minor problem.when i play counter-strike it no longer freezes but automatically turns on v-sync.i always set it to off.no other ogl games does this but only counter strike.well i dont consider it as a problem but quite annoying.

I am glad you solved your problems.

I would like to point again that a 250W P/S is normally enough.

Incompatibilities such those must be seeked out elsewhere. Especially when an Athlon is involved...
