need help with designing a system

I'm looking at a 800MHz Thunderbird. Should I get the socket or the slot version? What's a good place to buy it from? What mobo should I get with it? When buying RAM, it never says the company name. Does it matter what brand it is? If so how do I find out what brand the online store is selling? Or just point me to a place that sells the good stuff. Thanks alot!
