I have an IBM Aptiva E26 (if this helps) that has an AT power supply and motherboard.

My AT power supply has the two expected power cables running to the motherboard. It also, however, has a third, smaller cable running to a set of pins right next to the two power plugs. If this third cable is not attached, the motherboard won't boot.

So here's my question: Can I put a new motherboard in this system, or is this power supply proprietary for only IBM boards?

I'm not so sure if my answer is correct..But I'm gonna go out on a limb and say it most likely is proprietary but I'm almost positive that you can swap out the supply with one that is compatable..hehe don't quote me on that LOL...If you do find out for sure and can't use the powersupply and are getting a new one..Let me know, I am interested in your powersupply..I have a mobo that needs that particular supply, I bought the board new for an IBM machine I had but the supply that was in it was an older type so I shelved the mobo thinking that eventually I would find a supply for it and it's been 10 months since then and it has been just collecting dust LMAO...Sorry if I wasn't any help..

The 3rd connector is most likely for the switch. Many mass manufactured machines had AT power supplies with an ATX type switch, and the 3rd conn. looked almost just like the 2 for the mobo power. If you are gonna replace the mobo, you may as well spring for a new case and psu http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

I agree with grunt.

You may not even have to necessarily replace the case.. Possibly just the PSU if you like.
