Something, i.e. power supply ? makes a strange noise when system starts.
After the startup sequence the obvious noise is apparently gone. Usually
after the Win 98 logo comes on screen and the Hard drive activity seems
intense; then the noise is gone wgshaw

This is the response I received from ABS tech. I expected more. Than a stick
in the fan option?? Dear valued customer, First we need to determine exactly
if the powersupply is the problem. What I need you to do, Turn on the system
and when the noise occurs, try to stop the fan in the back with a stick, see
if the noise will go away. Please email back with the results.

Although the ABS response would give you the diagnostic information the
technician wanted, I would advise against placing a stick in your fan. In
all likelyhood, your fan simply has a build-up of dust around the bearings.
Get a can of compressed air from a computer outlet or office supply store
and blow the fan out from behind thoroughly.

Lots of sticks here in the Outback N 43.7 W 74.916 Don't plan on using
any for the stick in the fan option. Also have allot of "Hot" and other
variations of air, both compressed and gentle breeze type from the soft
gentle blown type to the 90# force of the compressed variety. Maybe
somewhere in between would seem rational. Tried this midlevel blow job and
removed some dust. Also around the processor I used a couple of Q tips to
gently remove Stuff?? Two small fans there. Removed the power supply from
the case to get a better look 250 watt cleaned fan there also. Will
possibly try your other diagnostic remedies. Have to look in my Dusty
closet to find the part of my brain not used in awhile to accomplish all you
suggest. BTW did you look at my previous video question. Seems you have
useful information and seemed to be more than willing to share same. Thanks
in advance. wgshaw American Outback

Computer not old but sometimes, I feel this new tech stuff is aging me
prematurely. Still makes noise when starting but seems o.k. once the
startup is finished.
Recent response via tech at ABS.
Dear valued customer,
So is to powersupply fan is the one that is making noise? If it
is please email back to obtain an rma# for a powersupply replacement

The noise is one of those annoying things that is now occurring that wasn't
there before. One wonders what caused the "sirens" of the computer gods to
torment me. This tune is always played first in the A.M. when starting up;
but not necessarily on a restart. Being a Caretaker for a living (jack of
all trades) When I notice a variation in something that was fine yesterday
I presume that the indicators of a possibly problem are demanding that I
take preventative action. The individual uniqueness of each computer makes
the process frustrating. One always hopes that someone out there had the
same problem (not that I would wish evil on anyone) or a close enough
approximation to end the torment and this ongoing destruction of my ever
decreasing brain cells.
