envy-the cambridge 4-point is PERFECT for the sblive...if you want to take it a little further, they also offer a complete dolby 5.1 system that, in my opinion, isn't needed with the sblive. BTW-are u up to date on your DVD-Encore? any problems?

It's better than it was!!! SOCALGAL http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
Should I brag about the $50 puter??
5 functional PCs here, for the time being;
CPUs=1:Pentium MMX 233 (that runs fine at 266), 2:K6 233s (one K6 system overclocks to 266 the other no)2:K6-2s (a 300 that refuses to overclock, and a K6-2 380 that is modestly ocd to 430mhz)
PC 100 SDRAM = 192MB total in 2 systems
60NS EDO DRAM = 192MB in 3 systems
6 UDMA HDDs = 15GB total in 5 systems, and a 7th 3.5 GB UDMA Maxtor on it's way back RMA.
5 CDROM 4x through 40x
1 CDR 4x8
2 AGP Video = TNT 16MB, STB Velosity 8MB
3 PCI video = Graphic Star 600, Rendition, ATI - 4MB each
2 56K "real" modems
1 56K choke - 'winmodem~
1 tried and true 33.6 data fax
and then there is a host of the other junk that puts systems together i.e. keyboards, mice, speakers, joysticks, cables.. bla bla.
also leftover parts: PCI video capture card,VX motherboard, mini tower case & PS, Pentium 120mhz CPU, 32MB EDO DRAM
...and I shouldn't leave out my 12mhz 286 with math co-processor, a whopping 8MB of system RAM, 512KB Trident video, and an incredible 40MB hard drive, in 89' it was quite a machine, http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

What I don't get is with all you people with nice systems use cheesy computer speakers
any brand is not very good at any reasonable price.I tried a few and being a stereophile would not except the inferior sound. In the audio world nobody would substitute thier three way towers for a Bose Lifestyles system.I use a Harmon Kardon reciever and custom 8" 2ways and they'll blow any computer speaker away even one by Altec-Lansing or Cambridge.I'm not saying a pair of 15" 3ways is in order but nice 6" 2ways
and passive 10'sub would be much better than satellites with 4' woofer and a 6 1/2" sub and yes there is a bevy of shielded speakers and drivers for those like me who prefer to do it themselves.
augidog
04-11-1999, 08:16 AM
gimoer-i don't think anyone would dispute the quality of sound components built by a company like H/K, but this is the computer world firstly, and one must set his or her own priorities.
after all, you are at the "System Optimization" website.
in my case, the cambridge speakers met my needs perfectly, and i doubt if i could get more than a set of speaker stands from harmon kardon for $100; and then i wouldn't be able to afford anything better than a "cheesy" sound card.
thanks for keepin' my thread alive...

I'm not saying you should invest a boatload of cash.I said my setup uses a HK reciever well it's over ten years old and cost around $60 and the speaker I made from an old pair of GE speakers($7 Salvation Army) and some drivers I got at a store closing.Total investment $100 and I use old stands which cost nothing.Yes I have several thousands invested in my home theater but for pc you could use a little ingenuity and elbow grease.I'm not saying it's junk either the sound is comparable to more expensive components.I did the same with my main speaker, though I invested a bit more into the cabinets and drivers.Well just a suggestion I don't mean to be condescending. And by the way my soundcard is used and only cost $30 it might be consider cheesy but hey.

Gimoer,
Sounds like you appreciate high fidelity sounds. If you do, you'll like the Product Reviews and Techtalk section here at www.audioreview.com/ (http://www.audioreview.com/) -Amazing. Some of these guys (a lot of them) leave the fanaticism of OverClockers in the gutter. One guy bought and reviewed his $8,000 cd player. There are discussions on the sonic subtleties and merits of a pair of 9ft speaker wire at a cost of $3800+ per pair. Speaker wire -fantastic!
But it's not all highend stuff. Everything and anything audio related. From RadioShack on up. I love it.
What speakers are you using for your audio system? Have you listen to any DTS CD's?
Sorry augidog... for getting away from the subject.

I hope all of your systems are working for on the RC5 Cracking contest! Some of those specs are pretty impressive!! For those of you who don't know what the RC5 Cracking contest is:
RSA Labs made a contest offering $10k to anyone who could crack their 64-bit encrypted message so Distributed.net made a program that uses your CPU's idle time to crack the code. All you have to do is install the client on your computer, enter your email in the config, join team Sysopt, and let it run!
What do you have to lose? NOTHING! The client doesn't slow your computer in any way, it's all automatic - you don't do anything - just let it run, and you could win $1000 for yourself and $1000 for Sysopt!
For more information go to:
http://www.distributed.net/
(D.net Main Page)
http://www.distributed.net/clients.html
(Page to D/L the client)
http://www.sysopt.com/rc5team.html
(Sysopt RC5 info page)
Make sure if you start the client, you join team Sysopt so our team gets credit for the time your computer cracks!!! Read Sysopt's info page for all the details and good luck!

The Z80 in my Radio Shack can do nearly 2MHz! Now, that's fast!

Can't even keep track of what else, closet's full of stuff waiting for me to get around to it, inc. 2 WD 8.4g HD's, another SB64, memory, extra laserjet, lord knows what, just can't pass a deal, usually buy 2 or more.
Next CPU upgrade planned for next month, trying to decide which way to go - AMD K6/2-450 on existing MB or Celeron on new board. Probably go with AMD, then put 233 on older board & upgrade 486.
BTW, augidog, you mentionened the speaker deal at Office Depot, did you see the HD deal in that same ad? They advertised Maxtor 8.4 for $100, but the stores around here were substituting WD's instead. It carries a valid $50 rebate! Can't beat 50 bucks for an 8.4 gig drive!!

Don't take this the wrong way, but I'm seriously struggling to see a point here. Why bother joining a team??? Your chances of winning are just as good going solo, and if you (by some very rare chance) actually crack it, you get a cool 2 grand instead of 1!!! Don't take this post the wrong way, RC5 is great and teams representing a site are great, but I'd rather have 2 grand than 1 grand. Please provide me with a reason why I need to "convert" to a team.

...i don't want to wander from the topic, but i'll give you my 'take' on your point.
we are already a team, and have a reputation, i.e. this 'board.
my chances of actually winning the money are so slim that 1 or 2 grand doesn't matter.
my chances of enjoying involvement in such an interesting undertaking, however, are very high, and being a part of SYSOpt in any small way only enhances that enjoyment.
please take any further discussion over to "distributed computing", and i'll see you there.

See that, augidog? I make that a total of four Z80s so far. I think we've beaten both the Cyrixs and the IDTs put together!
I'm real jealous of that Osborne (4MHz WOW!) but after all, the Osborne is just a new kid on the block. By the time it came out, they'd learnt to run the CPU a bit faster. The TRS-80 Model I was made way back in 1977 - only two years after the Altair and VERY early days. Nevertheless, I gather that even in those days there were ardent overclockers and tweakers; a whole book purely devoted to tweaking the TRS-80 was published at the time. Plus ça change!
BTW I absolutely agree with Pushrod. You have a really superb thread going here.

Yeah, I'm a packrat. There is actually more where all this came from, but the apartment I am living in only has so much room. Plans include a Linux box, an upgrade of the primary system a Celeron PPGA and a BM6 perhaps and a better AGP video card, and finishing the IBM PC from Hell. Next pet project may be upgrading the spare 800XL I have in the closet with things never intended for it. I'd also like to pick up a dual Pentium or PPro board for the NT box to chew on.

Aha! A NEC V20! I got one of those - in my Olivetti Prodest PC1 with 3.5" FDD, CGA graphics and 512Kb RAM (1987 vintage).
This thread is becoming more and more like a Classic Computers Convention. Blasts from the past - kinda brings tears to your eyes.
Watch out augidog! You got some real competition against that Cyrix of yours now http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif
ya know, i'm thinkin' next time i'm in a second-hand store i'll probably risk the $20 and bring one of those old tandy's home with me...any sites dealing in nostalgia (besides cyrix.com http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif)?

Yeah, I like CTX monitors. Good value.

Many problems. However, it runs real good, albeit slow, with a 1MB Trident video card! I can enable everything in BIOS and no crashes!
