I am making my site, and I am trying to register OCPower.net as we speak, but thats not the point. I need to know, how do you host a website on your own computer? How do other people acess it when it is on your own server? I can't find any other free website hosting companies that I like. If you know of one, please tell me, otherwise, answer my questions http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

If you have not found any free hosting services you like, then hosting it from your own computer isn't that much of a chore. You just need your computer to have maximum uptime, and a full time (dsl or cable hopefully) internet connection.. (56K will be slow to a LOT of users)
An internet server software app that I use, enjoy and reccomend to everyone is called Xitami webserver. http://www.xitami.com/
You can also install the Microsoft Personal Web Server software, which I believe is somewhere on the Windows 98 cd-rom. I don't have much experience with this program, so I cannot say whether it is good or bad, or whether it would be fit for your situation.
If you run a firewall, make sure you configure it so that your server will run compatibly. If you use ZoneAlarm only, its as simple as setting anything else up that requires use of your internet connection. But just be sure, if you are using ZoneAlarm to set the program to "Allow Server".
As for who will host your DNS servers, there are some typically good places, such as http://www.granitecanyon.com/ .. I have not used their services, so I cannot tell you whether it is good, bad, or right for you.
That is pretty much all you have to do, other than the fact that you'll need to set this all up with Network Solutions directly, a chore that a hosting company would have done for you.
If all else fails, you could try http://www.virtualave.net/ .. They are a free hosting company, with the only drawback being popup or banners on your page (choice)..
Hope I've Helped!

Its not free, but its pretty **** close:

To access your server you can use telnet (with linux it cake!) or, if you are in windows then a remote access software like Remote Administrator would be nice from www.famatech.com (http://www.famatech.com) . Having the server at your house can be a bad idea..leaves you open to hackers and other stuff. Also, what if you loose power? are you goin to have a huge battery backup? Gotta consider lottsa those things. What do you plan on hosting? just a website? You could use the Apache web server--its free! I think its apache.com or something like that. I would suggest learning a little about linux or Windows NT/2000. You REALLY don't want to host a website on a windows 98 computer--that OS just isn't made for it.

I got another option that I am using at the moment, I am using my ISP's Webspace, its free, and I get 10 megs, but I think I can get up to 25....
The only drawback is, there is a 300MB/day or hour user request thing, for traffic, I can't remember what one it is.....
Also, It needs to be free, as I have no way to send money, since I don't got a credit card... There IS a way, but its a big hassle, and I would rather not do it......
Is using my ISP's webspace a good idea?

You bet using your ISP webspace is good :-)
www.aros.net/~mntsnow (http://www.aros.net/~mntsnow) or www.mntsnow.com (http://www.mntsnow.com) You choose which one to visit..I could also have my ISP HOST my Domain name for like 2 bucks a month but I chose to use www.hostsave (http://www.hostsave) as I get much more space and additional perks.

MTP: I'm sure you could send a check for $12 to the one-dollar-hosting place http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif not all transactions need credit cards. Or, do what I do--instead of using a credit card (I have them..just don't use em), I use a check card. Talk to you bank about it. they are free and also work as an ATM card. I love my check card. I haven't written a check in 3 years!

In order to host the website on your Computer itself you need a dedicated connection to the internet and like already said more than a 56k modem.
You will also need a static IP address assigned to you by the company provided by your conneciton provider.
And of course you will need a DNS entery to resove your url to the ip address.
otherwise go with someone to host the site
