Hi
Since last August I have kept my IE5 history folders containing web pages and have the setting set to 999 days. I have not altered any settings on Internet Properties for ages but since 19th June no web pages have been saved in these folders. The folders are still created each day and week but contain nothing. I have 2GB free on the disc so this is not a problem. I cannot recall anything bad happening on 19th June either!
I can still access the Internet OK but sometimes instead of "internet" in the lower right corner the words "Local Intranet" appear - again I haven't touched a thing!
I defrag the disc on a regular basis and do all the "proper" things that should be done. I have no Window problems although for some, maybe related, reason, I cannot go into Safe mode.
I have been to the Microsoft site and the only solution they have to the history problem is under ref Q193278. They say this can be caused by having a # or @ symbol in the user name. I have neither of these in any user name.
This is really annoying me as I can't easily browse offline now.
Can anyone help me please!

There is a setting under the File Menu, called Work Offline. I believe that is the difference between Internet and Local Intranet you describe. Next time it says Local Intranet, go to the File menu and you should see Work Online as it works like a toggle.

See if that affects your history folder.

Additionally, one proper thing may be your web cahche is full, therefore it is not creating more history items. Go to Tools, Options and check out your cache settings. Increase them if need be as you have the disk space.

Thanks for your suggestions qball, but the history folders are still empty.

I have my cache set at 150mb but generally empty it at about 100mb using delete files on internet properties, so that wasn't causing the problem.

It's weird - when I go into Windows Explorer all the history folders have plus signs to the left of each week and day, however, when I click on the empty ones the plus sign disappears, if I click on the actual folder it's empty. The history folders that actually contain items are fine and work OK. It seems as though the system thinks there are items in these empty folders and it puts a plus sign by them.

I've read that the history folders don't actually contain anything but point to some sort of internal database - could it be that the link to this database is not working for these folders?? Could this be possible? My favourite folders are fine and work OK.

As a last resort I could uninstall then reinstall IE5 but would this cure the problem - it's something to do with folders surely?

Now, I've just remembered that the day before this history problem started I rearranged my drives.

The configuration before the change was:
Primary master: Quantum Bigfoot 12GB on C:
Primary slave: Not used
Secondary master: Matsu****a DVD SR8582 on E:
Secondary slave: Iomega 100MB Zip on D:

I then installed a new CD-RW and the set up became:
Primary master: Quantum Bigfoot 12GB on C:
Primary slave: Iomega 100MB Zip on D:
Secondary master: Ricoh CD-RW MP7080A on F:
Secondary slave: Matsu****a DVD SR8582 on E:

Yes I did remember to change/check the master/slave jumpers!

When I fired the thing up everything went fine although I had to swop the CDROM's drive letters in Device Manager to read as above.

All the drives work fine with no apparent loss of speed with the hard drive seeing there is now a Zip on the slave setting. No conflicts or anything.

Thing is, could this rearrangement have caused the history problem??

reddog4629 - I'll try that repair thing and let you know - thanks

Nope, that didn't cure it - I was really hopeful too, especially as it took a few seconds longer to reboot. Thanks for the tip anyway, at least I now know there is a repair option available.

Hmm..... what else can I try?????

Well, for the moment I'll shutdown and go to bed!

Have you tried the "repair" option? Go to add/remove programs and select IE/remove. There will be a repair option available. It has fixed some wierd problems for me. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Just to say the problem has been fixed, see my entry in Tech Support under 'IE History folder problem'.

We ask that problems "relating to the original thread" be kept in the same thread as much as possible so one won't have to search and that the troubleshooting path stays in the same thread. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif
