Hi guys. I have been a volunteer with the Lowcountry Multiple Sclerosis Society (LMSS) in Charleston, SC for some time. I help them with computer problems when they arise and take them to meetings, cut their grass or whatever they need. I am wanting to help some of the indigent members gain a little bit of freedom by building them minimal systems for internet. Many of them are not able to get out at all and this would be a great means for them to get a little more out of life.

To get to the point, I am wanting to build 2 and maybe 3 low end PCs for them and was looking for any spare parts you may have in your closets or under your beds to help me out. Any donations I get, I will send receipts from the LMSS for tax deductions. I can incur some of the cost if you would like compensation, but have little to give. Needless to say, I will not be selling them these systems except for a small portion of what I paid for them. I pretty much need everything since I really only have a case and two power supplies left right now.

What I am looking for:

Anything that can run under Win95. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
28.8 modems and up
any hdd
ISA sound cards
any video cards
floppy drives
486 and up processors and mobos
2-4x CD-ROMS and up

I'd be happy to do anything I can for you in return. (No nasty remarks here please! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif) I appreciate anything you guys can do. Both the Lowcountry MS Society and I thank you.

Please contact me via email at daveleau@yahoo.com or leaumont@musc.edu When you contact me I'll send my phone number so we can talk if you like. My references as a trader are here if you want to have a look.

Dave, I've a BUNCH of 486 setups. Have to check how many, but I think 5 or 6 are left.

MB,CPU,fan, vesa video & I/O cards.
DX2-50's mainly.

How many do you want?

Have some other stuff from that era also, but I'll have to check what's there.

I just won a modem in KillerBug's giveaway. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif If it's a 28.8 or above, it's yours. I'm waiting to hear from KB and I'll email you and let you know. It would be put to a far better task with you.

My faith in humanity is constantly refreshed by people like you who give back to their communities. Thanks, Dave. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I have 2x8mb EDO 72pin simms if you want them Dave.

I feel bad because thats all I have to offer, and right now I can't even afford postage the the great US! Doh!

Might have a couple of 540/635mb hard drives if you want them, I think they have a few bad blocks but nothing too serious. I'll have a look out for them, and see if anything else comes along.

daveleau
03-10-2000, 06:46 PM
definately interested in them Richamies. I can send you the postage first and then you could send the stuff if that'd help.
Thanks
Dave

Oh I am getting some 72pin mem. Do any of the boards use 30 pin exclusively Ed?

OK I have an Oak ISA video card here as well, and a 486 mobo. Don't know the make of the 486 mobo, or indeed even if this one works but I'm assured it does. UMC chipset, 3 PCI, 4 ISA, 2 72 pin simm sockets, and an AMD DX4/100 on it. AMI bios too, but no box/manual/etc.

I also saw a Compaq 386/33 box in the street today. Want me to go see if it's still there?

All have at least 2 - 72 pin slots.
Some have 4 - 30's, some have 8.

daveleau
03-10-2000, 07:03 PM
wow 8 slots! I will have to check out 30 pins simms. Are there different types of 30pin simms? Thanks Ed.

Don't get TOO excited there, Dave! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/biggrin.gif http://www.sysopt.com/forum/biggrin.gif
30 pin simms were mostly one meg, have never seen any over a whopping 4 meg, and it took 4 slots to equal one memory bank! Meaning they HAD to be used in matched sets of 4...

Stick with the 72's as much as possible, but the option for 30's is there if needed!

Ed

Can you use the 30s to suppliment the 72s?

Rick
P.S. I apologize for not getting back to you sooner on this - my version of Win95 was so old that it should have been in a museum! I'm now running on the Win98SE you sent me - Awesome!!! Can't thank you enough!!! I also have a Pentium 100Mhz w/VERY LARGE heatsink if you can use it, LMK okay?!

2336 - Dave hasn't got the boards, but YES - he can use those FPM's, he just doesn't know it yet!! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Also - anybody got some VESA I/O cards? Thought I had more but these were mostly ISA. Boards are all VESA capable, though.

Hi Dave,

I've got:
a 486 CPU
a 800MB? Maxtor HDD
8 x 1MB SIMM
a couple of printer cables
a few IDE cables
and possibly some other stuff, like spare mice and keyboards, at my father's place.

Sorry, had a lot more at one point but gave them away to my brother-in-law and a starving tenth-year graduate student who needed a computer to finish his dissertation.

Let me know by mail what you'd like and where to send it!

~10 ISA modems 14.4 and faster
~ need sound cards (ISA) for CD-ROM connections.

Thanks guys. I really appreciate it.

I have some stuff for you. Send your address to monrocm@texaco.com and I'll ship this stuff to you 2nd day air through Airborne Express before I leave work today.

I don't know if you need any of this, but maybe you can trade them for something you do need.

4 3Com ISA Etherlink III network cards
10 PC microphones.
3 72pin SIMMs 8megs ea.
1 Pentium 90 CPU
1 600meg IDE harddrive

I think I have another Pentium CPU, and a 80mhz cyrix CPU & mobo at home. I may also have another couple 500+ meg harddrives, a modem, and a video card (sorry no sound cards). I'll put together another package over the weekend when I have more time to go through my boxes of parts. Need power cables, or IDE ribbon cables? Could you use PS2 keyboards?

I too am working to support the National Multiple Sclerosis Society (Lone Star Chapter). every year I raise money for the National MS Society by participating in the MS 150 Charity bicycle tour. I know there are people out there who may have doubts about this is a ligitamate cause. I encourage those people to check out the MS 150 website at www.ms150.org (http://www.ms150.org) If anybody wants to fight MS, but doesn't have parts to send, read this letter below.

Hello All,
On Saturday and Sunday, April 15th and 16th, 2000, I will be joining thousands of bicyclists riding 168 miles from Houston to Austin in the annual MS 150 Bike Tour to help fight Multiple Sclerosis. By making a pledge on my behalf, you are supporting national Multiple Sclerosis research, providing local programs and education to individuals in our area who are affected by Multiple Sclerosis, and helping me reach my goal of raising $800 for the NMSS in 2000.

Use the following secure link to donate online in my name. The website is secure, fast and easy to use. At the website you will be able to choose an amount to donate and receive email confirmation of your donation. I will be notified via email as soon as you make your pledge.

Multiple Sclerosis is a chronic, often disabling disease of the central nervous system. Symptoms may be mild such as numbness in the limbs, or severe paralysis or loss of vision. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 40 but the unpredictable physical and emotional effects can be lifelong. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are giving hope to those affected by the disease. At this time, there is no known cause, cure, or effective treatment for Multiple Sclerosis. I appreciate your continued support of the MS Society and the Isuzu MS 150 Bike Tour. The funds raised on the Isuzu MS 150 Bike Tour provide equipment, financial assistance, self-help groups, counseling, information and resources, as well as education for people with MS and their families. Your support truly makes a difference in the lives of people with Multiple Sclerosis.

My sincere thanks for your support,
Claude "Trey" Monroe

Hiya dave as I sead in the e-mail I would post this Trader who added 10 New 44 Mb Syquest Cartridges to the next shipment, his name is Daniel Moore and when he found out why I took all his stock of 45 Mb Mass cartridges for the LCMS, he donated these to be included in the next shipment going Stateside,
So if any of you Gals and Guys out there have any SyQuest drive that take 44Mb and Mass 45Mb cartridges Dave could sure use them, as these are now pretty much old format you will have to dig in your cupboards or under the bed to find them, but I am sure you will agree they can be pressed back into service for a good cause such as this one. http://thedam.com/cwm/smile/cwm/spin2.gif

I have:

486 dx2/66 w/ mobo and case, floppy
180Mhz board (can email manual)
120Mhz processor
14.4 Maxtech Modem (I'll check for drivers on that)
2x Creative CD-ROM
8M 30-pin RAM (don't remember the indiv. sticks!)
8M 72-pin EDO RAM (2 4meg sticks)
2 Microsoft Serial Mice
And about 4000 1.44Meg floppies for boot disks, or whatever.

Glad to see so many people helping out for a worthy cause.
