I have an old monitor that was given to me, and I know that it's probably soon to die, but I would rather it wait and die after I have a job and money. So, right now, it blinks from very very dark screen to very very light screen, and often. Anyone know what's happening? Is it dying or can I save it?

Sounds similar to what happened to me. My vga cable went bad on my old packard bell.
I happy to say I have a 19" right now but am still looking for a cable. So if anyone has any ideas let me know.

Ive taken it apart and havent found it anywhere. The part that goes inside the monitor attaches with 4 bare wires and the other end is the type that attaches to the
video card.

Does it go and come back when whacked?
How about the bright/contrast controls?
Those controls can get "dirty" and can develop a bad spot which can be intermittent thus making the screen go dark and bright.
Sometimes working the control back and forth rapidly can clean them a bit.

If the thing comes and goes when whacked it is probably a loose solder connection internally and unless you are good at spotting crudy connections and soldering then you'd best leave that to someone who is good at it.

Then there is a possible thermal breakdown of some component. At a certain temp it breaks down, cools off then works again....cycle continues.

And of course don't rule out the cable. Good luck!
