I was wondering why DVD burners are not coming into the market. I have only been able to find one made by pioneer that costs $5000 and the media is $40 a disk. Anyone know why DVD burners haven't started to be produced in mass by all the major companies yet?

maybe because all dvd's are copyright protected and there for you would not be able to burn dvd's legally!!
I am not sure about this, but it seems the most logic thing to me!!

Do you mean something like this?

What's to say you couldn't use a DVD burner to burn data to DVD blanks? There is a slim selection of programs/games that are available on DVD. DVD's would be great for storing files - GB's of storage per CD.

From what I understand the reason that DVD burners have not been Hot sellers is because there still is not a "standard" spec on the recording format....KInda like the old VHS and Beta thing...
There are DVD-RAM (data) burners in the $500 range. I think the manufacturers are quietly agreeing not to make the video burners cheap enough for everybody. Music piracy with MP3 is causing enough trouble. And that's in spite of the poor quality.
The standard is set, it's not about that, and the real Pirates can afford the $5000 models. So what else can it be?

Roy, What standard did they choose? Last I saw they were still working on it.

Here i found the internal DVD-RAM. I found it in my Tiger magizine. But i had to look at a older issue because the newer ones do not have it. I don't know why. So the DVD disk is inside that cartrige. Oh ok i see now. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif As DVD's are super sensitive to dust and scratches i think it's best to keep in in it's plastic cartrige.

I think that i browsed through an article at altavista's Tech page - it said that there were big compatability problems with the different makers - there probably isn't a standard yet -

Actually, those compatability problems listed in the last post have apparently been resolved. I read someware that 3 major manufacturers are going to release their standardized format within the next month, I think that they were Mitsubishi, Sony, and someone else. If they can make them write to CD-RW disks as well, Im gonna be first in line!!
By "standard" I mean that I can go to the Video Store and rent or buy a disc that will play in a home player. skybolt_1 may have the better answer, but why bother with RW? As with CDR, the price of the media will drop to the point where you can throw them away like floppies. And if data storage is the point, DVD-RAM isRW. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif
There are a DVD-Ram burner of Creative (about $500). But as the standard is not defined I don't buy it.

I just saw an article on the Ziff-Davis website about a DVD-burner which will record video in the standard DVD format for any player (not just PC's). I'm too lazy to find it again, but the cost was around $1500.
JL_in_Vail ~ there are several people here who wish you weren't so lazy.
Maybe this is the article:

Current DVD-RAM drives, first generation, write DVD's that can only be read in a DVD-RAM drive. At PC Expo, several manufacturers announced new DVD-RAM drives that write to DVD's that can be read in a standard DVD-ROM drive or DVD player. We'll have a review of one once we get a sample, since we're on the list to get one.
here's another link to keep an eye on -

I expect my daughter will get CD's instead of text-books by the time she gets to grade school.....

The DVD-RAM drive is out, yes! However, before you rush out and buy one, a few considerations. (+)A DVD can store approx. 4.7GB uncompressed. (-) The fastest one I know of is 2X. Now 2X in DVD terms is a bit diff. than CD terms. 1X in CD terms is 150Kb/s. Thus 2X 300, 4X 600, etc. 1X in DVD terms is 1.38Mb/s (1380Kb/s) so 2X is decent. (+) You can copy your DVD movies FOR PRIVATE USE. (-) Media is as expensive as buying a second copy of the movie in some cases. (+) It's new, and impressive to own (-) a year from now it will be "That old thing" and new stuff will be on the market. (+/-) DVD's may not catch on as a media. At the moment there is something pending release. A 3 dimensional data storage device using holograms as it basis. A 2"x2"x2" cube can store a whopping 10GB of information. A random seek time of a blistering 4.5 microseconds. This may not catch on either, something "new" will come out a year later. Wait it out and see what appears.
